Creswell families of Smalley, Denby, Pentrich, etc
« on: Sunday 27 May 07 18:41 BST (UK) »
This is yet another attempt at the Cresswell join-the-dots puzzle; not for my own Carrington line but for my Smalley OPS website.

I have three different Cresswell families in Smalley but as yet I still cannot connect them.

Samuel Cresswell, born abt 1765, probably the son of Samuel of Pentrich, abt 1735; Samuel Jnr married Phoebe Kerry 25 Dec 1789 at Morley; he died in Smalley in 1819; he and Phoebe had 10 children who were probably all born in Smalley or Shipley; the family seem to have been Baptists.

Lewis Cresswell, born abt 1807 in Smalley; son of John Cresswell & Elizabeth Holland, who were married 12 Aug 1793 at Morley; all their children were born in Smalley.

Patrick Creswell, born abt 1727 in Denby; son of Patrick Cresswell & Dorothy Bullock of Denby; with a long line of Denby Cresswells before them.
Patrick Jnr married Ann Waterhouse in Smalley in 1747; their sons George and Thomas were both born in Smalley.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions.

Information for Cresswell researchers -
I have given up trying to connect these families, so I have put the four lines on my website, in the hope that some of it all might make sense to someone!

Hi Suz,
I have come across this one before but couldn't make a connection.
Do you think he could be part of this chap's family?

This is the only unlinked Horsley Cresswell that I have so far.

Dear Penna,

I have two entries for Cresswell's and an Oldknow of Smalley who appear in the 1842 Parliamentary enquiry into Child Labour. Do you already have them or would you like the detail?

Mog.

Hello Mog,
As I have 'loaned out' my 1842 CD - and don't know when I will get it back - it would be very helpful if I could have the details.

Dear Penna
The following appear:-
Smalley Pits - Christopher Oldknow - 12 years old - worked in Smalley pit for 1 year and a quarter. He wagons and wears the belt. 36 Tons is the days work for which he gets 2 shillings. He goes down at 7 until 8 or 9 with half an hour or sometimes an hour for dinner. .... He was in a farmer's service for half a year before he worked in the pit. He used to go to Smalley Free School. He attends the Baptist Chapel once a Sunday. He can read but never learnt to write. He does not go to Sunday School because his clothes are not good.

Denby & Kilburne Pit - James Cresswell - just 14 and has worked in the pits for 4 or 5 years. Draws the wagons by the belt. He has 1 shilling and threepence a day. He goes down at 6.30 till 9 but this Winter after 10.

Also George Cresswell - 12 years old. Has worked there for 2 years. He lives a mile from the pit. He was at Smalley Free School before he worked at the pits....His father is a holer. (His mother is also mentioned). Can scarcely spell words of more than one syllable but otherwise is a sharp boy.
Can PM the full transcriptions to you if required.
