1851 lookup request - Rathbone.
« on: Tuesday 29 May 07 19:14 BST (UK) »
Looking for John Rathbone age 22 in the 1851 census. Born Exhall near Coventry in 1829 he was at home in 1841 at Exhall Green with parents John and Elizabeth but I cannot find him in Warwickshire in 1851. He married Alice Insley at Hartshill in 1852 which is near the border with Leicestershire and Staffordshire so could he have found work in one of those counties?
Alternatives are the usual suspects of army or prison.

Any information would be much appreciated
Al

Hi Al,
I have found these details H0107/2063 F422 P13
Fillongley Warwickshire
? House

A John Radford age 22 born Exhall a servant, the image is quite bad but may be your John Rathbone. Above his name is what may be your Alice Insley also a servant age 19 born Hartshill.

Maybe someone else can look at this image and can read it better than me.

If it is what you are looking for they have both been transcribed as the surnames Radford for John and Indley for Alice .

Regards

Cathy,
Thank you for that, I think you have hit the nail on the head! I suspected the name may have been put down wrongly as he never moved far all his life and I had looked at some near spellings but could not come up with the alternative.
Superb, it all fits, so many thanks again, very much appreciated.
