Would value help from someone vis-a-vis checking CRO Birth Index:

I am looking for all the MERRITT'S of female gender born June 1881
anywhere in Sussex. Hopefully there will not be too many of them
because I may have to purchase  their Birth Certificate. I am attempting to
find a person who subsequently changed her registered forenames.

First stop would be freebmd.rootsweb.com to gov a good idea of numbers

Otherwise use a paid service like www.1837online.com.

Hi,

I've had a look on the freeBMD but so far only about 20% of 1881 has been transcibed, with the only Merritt entries being in the december quarter. I think for now you will have to use the fee paying website mentioned by Pauline.

Regards

Paula
