1901 Census lookup for Derry - McGowan
« on: Thursday 31 May 07 17:38 BST (UK) »
Would some one be able to do a lookup for me in the 1901 Londonderry (Derry) census for the family of Edward McGowan? I don't know his wife's name - could be Mary. He had a daughter called Bridget.

The family lived on the Creggan Road, Templemore Parish.

Regards,

Mary Ann

Came across this old post on another board so I've moved it to Co. Derry one. Since you first posted the 1901 and 1911 census, as well as other resources, have come online.

In 1901 census Susan McGowan (a widow) is living with 2 daughters so Edward must have died before 1901.

Thank you aghadowey:)

Wow...that was awhile ago....LOL

Last month I made a real breakthrough finding this family. I was cleaning out my brother's house to sell it (he has moved to a retirement home) and I discovered some notes he made about 20 odd years ago. It turns out that my grandmother Bridget McGowan had siblings that I wasn't aware of in 2007. I found births for all of them except the youngest. Then I had a brain wave and decided to look farther afield for my McGowans. Lo and behold. The youngest son was born in Glasgow! After I discovered this fact I found them there in the 1891 and 1901 Scotland census:) Sometime between 1901 and 1911 they returned to Derry. I found them there in 1911.

If it hadn't been for that lucky find at my brother's I'd still be looking :-X

So I guess the moral of the story is if you are looking for Irish relatives don't forget to look in Scotland too. This year I discovered that droves of them left Ireland for work between 1901 and 1911 and stayed there.

So is the family I found in 1901 not the correct one?

I know the age is slightly off and 1911 says Bridget born Donegal but part of Donegal comes under Derry registration district so might be worth keeping in mind-
Bridget Mcgowan, born 20 May 1874 Derry, Londonderry- parents Edward Mcgowan & Mary Brannon

Any of the children born in Scotland? Scottish birth certificates list date and place of parents' marriage. As well as mother's name.

Patrick Mcgowan born 1 Jan.1878 Derry, Londonderry- parents Edward Mcgowan & Mary Ann Brannon

William Mcgowan born 2 Mar.1870 Londonderry, Londonderry- parents Edward Mcgowan & Mary Brannon

Eliza Mc Gowan born 3 Jan.1868 Londonderry- parents Edward Mc Gowan & Mary Brannan

Thank you for this:)

Yes....John McGowan, the youngest, was born January 9, 1901 in Glasgow...parents Edward McGowan and Mary McElwee. They were married in Londonderry on May 27, 1884. I have that cert now:)

My great grandfather Edward McGowan was born about 1861 and I have his parents as Edward McGowan and Mary Brennen ....I have to check as I'm not sure where I got that from???

I have a note that he had two sisters Annie abt 1865 and Mary abt 1866.....so Bridget, Patrick, William and Eliza are his siblings...wouldn't you agree?

So, it seems as though...

Edward McGowan m. Mary Brannon/Brannan
?1. Edward (c1861) m.(1884) Mary McElwee
2. Eliza (3 Jan.1868)
3. William (2 Mar.1870)
4. Bridget (20 May 1874)
5. Patrick (1 Jan.1878)

So this is the McGowan Family I was originally looking for in 1901. Here they are in 1911

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Londonderry_Urban__4_/Creggan_Road/602998/

Of course the ages are iffy as usual and the surname is an alternate spelling:)

Mary Magowan age 44 is my great grandmother
Bridget age 22 is my grandmother
Edward age 20
John age 10...it says he was born Derry but he was in fact born in Glasgow.

My great grandfather Edward McGowan died between the 1901 and 1911 census. He was a seaman and a ships rigger. Whether he died in Scotland or Ireland is still under investigation.

This is my great grandparents:
Edward McGowan and Mary McElwee had five children that I have found so far:
Bridget 1885 my grandmother
Annie 1887
Edward 1890
Patrick 1895
John 1901

Annie and Patrick seemed to have died as infants and I have found some death records that are possibles for them.
