Who was "JOHN GARROW" to have a Ship named after oneself.

A Iron sailing ship called the "John Garrow" was built in 1840 at the
Aberdeen shipyard of John Ronalds & John Coutts.

I would like any information on the man John Garrow, too have a ship
named after oneself, he must have been well known in Aberdeen.

Port of registry: Liverpool
in 1849/50 she sailed from Liverpool to New Orleans.

Any information would be welcome.

The ship may have been called after a Liverpool ship owner of that name.
A Google search produced the following information which you may already have:

JOHN GARROW
Rigging: iron Ship
Master: Captain Thomson
Tonnage: 685 using old measurements and 849 using new measurements
Construction: 1840 in Aberdeen; vessel lengthed in 1842
Owners: Cannon and Co.
Voyage: sailed from Liverpool, bound for New Orleans

"The John Garrow iron ship, Captain J. Wilson, an iron vessel of 895 tones, calculated to carry 40 keels of coals, arrived in the river Tyne on Friday last. When she entered the narrows she was drawing ten feet of water. Since her arrival she has continued to excite much curiosity ; part of her standing rigging is made of wife, and except her top and decks she is exclusively made of iron. Captain Wilson has ordered that parties visiting her shall pay 1s. each, which will be given to the Shipwreck Society. She is named after the principal in the firm in Liverpool who are her owners. The John Garrow will load here immediately for Bombay. It is understood she sailed well during her passage from Aberdeen, and every day comes up to the most sanguine expectation that was formed of her capabilities - Newcastle Chronicle."

A John Garrow Esquire of Liverpool is in the will of my GGGG/father
he could be his brother-in-law,in 1816 a John Garrow was a
Thread Manufacturer in Aberdeen,he was a wittnes at his sister's
wedding to my GGGG/father James Sheriffs in Aberdeen.

Looking into my family history, I've just discovered that my great great grandfather was John Anderson and my great great grandmother was Ann Garrow.  John was the son of John Anderson and Ann was the daughter of William Garrow, both from Aberdeen, who were living in Bootle-cum-Linacre in Liverpool in 1841. Their company, Anderson, Garrow and Co., owned the ship John Garrow, possibly named after William's father.  Perhaps they didn't own it for very long. 

By 1861 William Garrow was listed as a master cooper, living in West Derby, Liverpool.  The John Garrow sank in December 1856, and the family after that was less prosperous. 

It's been very interesting seeing the information you've gathered, and there's plenty more information out there.

    I do have some Information on the Garrow family, I will make it short in case you already have
it on your family tree.          William Garrow married Ann Irvine -17 July 1826
         William parents --    John Garrow & Helen Henry  add 8 Garrow's Court Trinity St Aberdeen
           John's  parents     John Garrow & Isobel Cruickshank ? ( I'm not to sure on the mother)

from the 1853 Liverpool Directory:-   Garrow John Silk Merchant.(Sidney & C) 58 Church St
                                                       Garrow William, Gentlemen, 7 Richmond Vale. Bootle.
 Have you come across  Isabel Garrow & James Shirreff or what ever the spelling, she is John's sister ,    I have more paper work ok. hope to hear from you.

Thank you!  It's good to be able to search further back now.  John Anderson and William Garrow belonged to the Spalding Club in Aberdeen.  William Garrow was a member of the Society of Advocates and had an MA from Marischal College.  I'd like to go to Aberdeen and find out more!
