Finding a birth without the surname

Has anybody tried searching on Freebmd.org without a surname?

I suspect the person I'm looking for might be either illegitimate or his mother might have married agin and he took his stepfather's surname. I know a rough date of birth and his first name but Freebmd just can't cope with the size of the query.
Eaton (Woughton on the Green, Doncaster and N. London), Davis(Shinfield and London), Harrington (Ireland and London), Sutcliffe (Todmorden and London), Williams, Hollingsworth (Thaxted), Lane (Rotherhithe), Fuller (Chesterton, Cambs), Dilley (who knows where????)

Have you tried the FreeBMD database on www.ancestry.co.uk ? Their search engine is far more powerful  8)

Yes I have done this but it is easiest with unusual  forenames.
Try to limit the search by date and by registration district.  You may have to do lots of searches to cover all the dates and all the possible birth locations.
I assume you have already tried his mother's maiden name?

Unfortunately I don't know his mother's maiden name :-\ ::)

but I will try the ancestry.co.uk serach
