Help Reading these, Please
« on: Sunday 03 June 07 12:43 BST (UK) »
I spent yesterday searching for my paternal Grandmothers family and found census returns on Ancestry from 1841 to 1901, however I am unable to read either the place or occupation on one of them.

The details are 1871 Census, Chesterfield, Source Ref RG10, Piece 3612 Folio 54, Page 10

I am trying to work out where they were living at the top of the page and the occupation of Thomas GOULD (he is with William, Catherine & Sarah GIBBS. I think it says Labourer at Gas ????.

All ideas welcome

HI Newfy

Thanks for this, i'll have a look at some of the other pages.

Wonder what sort of place they lived in as there don't seem to be house numbers just the name at the top of the sheet.

I thought Gas Yards but will look at your suggestion again.

Cheers

It would have been logical to be Gas Works, but theres another occupation that has the word Works, and the W is very different ....

Okay guys, I have reached 1901 census and can't read the occupations. Looks like the enumerator has scrawled over them.

Can anyone help?

Details are 1901 Census Manchester St george. RG13 Piece 3754 Folio 48 Page 31. In 1891 Thomas Gould was a Gas Stoker and I think it is the same on this one, but can't make out the rest.

cheers

I think I can see:

Metal Plater 'White'
<Crossed out> (Warehouse)
Chard Boy

If memory serves me correctly, chard is the scraps of metal that come off a lathe so the Chard Boy would be te sweeper of that.

Interestingly that was my first job. :)
