Convict to Australia - Arthur KELLY, born abt. 1806 in Belfast
« on: Monday 04 June 07 00:57 BST (UK) »
I am looking to find out more about Arthur KELLY, born abt. 1806 in Belfast.

Arthur KELLY arrived in Australia as a convict onboard the `Minstrel`, crime unknown.  The `Minstrel` sailed from Portsmouth, Hampshire, England on 17 April 1825 and arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 22 August 1825.

Arthur married Margaret ABRAHAM (also a convict) on 21 August 1839 at Castlereagh Church of England, New South Wales, Australia.

Any information about Arthur KELLY and/or his family would be greatly appreciated.

Best Wishes,
Sarah WALKER (m.s. HALL)

There are 2 children in the NSW birth records that could be children of Arthur and Margaret
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=births

They are all born before civil registration started so the records would be baptism only. You can search the NSW bdm online & buy transcripts if required. What other information were you hoping to find?

There is a possible burial record (again pre civil records) for Arthur Kelly age 42 in 1855 (birth date out to your record)

Thanks for that Trish,

Yes I found those two children on NSW BDM.

I just found out that Arthur KELLY died in 1865 in Queensland.

I have none of the relevant certificates pertaining to this family yet.

I should have remembered to check the AVRI as the NSW online does not give the parish for most church records. Both the children were baptised Parramatta, St Patricks, Roman Catholic

Trish

I assume you know the Qld BDMs are now online - the actual date of the 1865 death (on CD) is 18 Jul 1865. There is also an Arthur Kelly died in Qld 31 Jan 1872

Sorry - I should have given the link (you have probably found it by now  :) )
http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm/IndexSearch.htm  - It doesn't give the date - only the registration year - however, I note that some extra information is given if the parent names are unknown  :)  :)

Hi Sarah,

The following websites might help you with your convict information.  I am assuming your man came to NSW.  The State Records of NSW site will be particularly helpful if he did.  If you live in Australia you can have access to pre 1856 BDMs for no cost via film as part of the Archives of NSW kit held by most larger libraries.

For convicts to Port Jackson you can't go past http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html

For convicts to Tasmania try http://www.rootsweb.com/~austas/convictsdw.htm

Western Australia try www.convictcentral.com

Victoria http://home.vicnet.net.au/~dcginc/

Lots of information on NSW State Records site such as Certificates of Freedom, Pardons, Colonial Secretary's letters etc.  http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/

The Society of Genealogists have Ticket of Leave indexes and will send a copy of the TofL for $11.00  www.sag.org.au

Genealogical Society of Queensland have a Convict Connections group records of the relatively few convicts who came to Qld.   http://www.gsq.org.au/society/who.html

I think there is also a South Australian site but they didn't get too many convicts.

Records of Old Bailey Trials are also on the net for any convict tried in London.  County Record Offices sometimes have copies of trials, sometimes not. See Genuki website for each individual county record office as well as http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Irish Convicts well catered for as there is an online index of nearly every Irish convict sent to Australia, known as the Irish Gift as the Irish Govt gave it to Australia as a Bicentennial gift.
