SANSON family of Lyme Regis
« on: Saturday 16 June 07 09:19 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a John Sanson who may have been born in Lyme Regis in about 1837, he may have had a brother James, and he may have had some family emigrate to New Zealand. He was in Crondal, Fleet, Hampshire in 1871.
I am actually chasing up a Sophia Sanson/Sansom who married a George Nisbet (born in Newcastle Upon Tyne) in New Zealand in 1880, she was born in Hampshire (she is probably the Sophia Sanson born in Southampton and her father is listed as John Sanson of Dorset, her mother is Ellen, born Surrey) There are Sansons who came to Wellington, NZ about 1841 from Lyme Regis and I know that somewhere there is a connection to the Nisbet family.
I am looking for Sophia's parents so that I can find her ancestors.

Bit negative I'm afraid!  Checked the 1841 census for Lyme Regis as transcribed on the Dorset OPC site

http://www.dorset-opc.com/LymeRegisFiles/LymeRegis.htm

No sign of Sanson or Samson but of course they could have been in the surrounding district, there are a couple of Samsons shown in both 1861 and 1871 at Lyme.

Spiderboy.

Just a thought there is an Elizabeth SAMPSON a Laundress aged 25 with Henry aged 7.

Thank you for your reply, I looked through the site of the 1841 census and did find the Elizabeth Sampson, I also spotted an Eliza Samson aged 70, and I also saw a few Halletts, and I know that the Robert Sanson who came to NZ in 1841 was previously married to an Elizabeth Hallet, she died in England then he married an Ann Lucas and they emigrated to NZ. I still have not quite linked them up to the Nisbet family but I do know that an Edward Nisbet from Newcastle upon Tyne did board with a Sanson family in Lyme Regis and that name Edward is a Nisbet name which has followed through, so a long-ago link is there somewhere - it is like a jigsaw puzzle, not all the pieces quite fit - yet!

Don't know if you've looked at the 1851 for Lyme Regis?  But I notice in an index for it that there are 18 with the Sanson name and 55 named Hallett there.  Amongst them is a James Sanson 20 year old Seaman born Lyme Regis - Piece: 1862. Folio: 87.

Robert Sanson and family came to New Zealand from New Zealand on The Tyne in 1841 and so are not included in the 1841 census.

There was a John Sansom alia Collier from Hawkchurch (just a few miles from Lyme Regis).  Members of the family emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1840s.
