McGranahan family
« on: Saturday 16 June 07 23:53 BST (UK) »
Hullo from Qld Australia

I am looking for any information on this family.

Michael McGranahan b. abt 1814 m. Catherine Savine b. abt 1822 near Coleraine, Londonderry.

They emigrated to Victoria Aust. in 1852 with 6 children,
Patrick 13 years
Henry 12 year
Margaret Jane 9 years
Ellen Mary 7 years
Nelson 4 years
Catherine 1 year

Michael McGranahan's father was Patrick McGranahan, farmer, and mother Margaret Adrian.

Catherine Savine's father was John Savine, army officer, and mother Mary Henry.

The above information was on Michael and Catherine's death certificates, but would love some dates, and any sort of information on the family.

With thanks

Annette

I am friends with McGranaghans from the Coleraine area.  Would there be another spelling of the surname possible in your family history.

Hi Betty

Thanks for your reply.  Anything is possible with spellings of names. The family is listed as Mcgranahan on the shipping list I have, and they could have just kept using it, lots of names got changed when people arrived in Australia, quite often through misspellings.

Do your friends have any family history of any of their family migrating. ?

The McGranahans were farming in Victoria near a small town called Ballan.  Unfortunately Patrick died 9 years after arriving of diptheria.  In the meantime though they had another 5 children.

Catherine who was 1 when they migrated married Henry Charles Busch in Brisbane, Qld.  He was brought up in the Goldfields of Central Victoria and probably met Catherine, who was known as Effie in Victoria, and she came north to marry him.  He was a master at Ipswich Grammar School, near Brisbane.  He drowned in the Brisbane River age 31 in 1889.  Effie took the children (5) to Western Australia.

Henry and Effie's daughter, Caroline Ethel Busch, was my late husband's grandmother.

That's a bit of OZ history for you.  Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Annette

Dear Annette

have spoken to my friend and she mentioned it to her husband.  Unfortunately he has no recollection of anyone of his family with your details.  He was a single child and says there are no family histories or collections at his mum's home and she has now passed on - so no luck I'm afraid.

Sorry I couldn't help.

Regards
Betty

Hi Annette,

Just found your message,as was '07 when you posted message I hope you are still connected and interested in family history.
I have been checking this McGranahan family as a rather extended branch of mine and willing to swap notes. I have  some information on descendants of Michael and Catherine McGranahan's son Daniel who married 1888 to Margrette Estelle Levick [nee Emerson] she had been widowed in 1886.
