Toll / Toal and McTeague / Montague, born Ireland, but where ???
« on: Sunday 17 June 07 23:38 BST (UK) »

I am stuck at these 2 ancestor's from Ireland who married in Glasgow.

William Toll/Toal married Margaret Jane McTeague/Montague on 8 July 1867, Shettleston, Glasgow
William parents were James Toll, farm labourer and Helen Toll, m.s. Toll - deceased.
Margaret's were Hugh McTeague, farm labourer- deceased and Jane McTeague, m.s. Hannigan

Census returns show that they were born in Ireland but i have no idea whether they came to Glasgow together or simply met here.

The parents details are the same on their death certificates.
William was born about 1848 ?
Margaret was born about1851 ?

Does anyone have any ideas how i can find their birthplaces ?

Thank you
Debbie

Celia

Thank you so much for trying so hard to help me, i can now rule out the IGI, will have to try the BIVRI next if possible.
I know how long it would have taken to go through all those Toal's and i sincerely appreciate your help.

Thanks again
Debbie

http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?fuseaction=Go.&UserID=

A few more variations of the Toal/Toll surname listed here.  Its a pay site but has quite a lot of free info. :)

My great-grandfather was William McTeague, from Malherafelt, Co Derry, Ireland. He immigrated to Glasgow and married Catherine Convery who was from Northern Ireland too. I have a spreadsheet from PRONI that lists McTeague baptism from the area. Someone typed out this information from the Microfiche. There are a number of parishes mentioned.
I visited a graveyard in Ahasgaskin - there were McTeagues there.
Also, as a matter of interest, William's name got changed to Montague - I think it started as a clerical error in regard to public housing. Then when the children went to school, although they were baptized "McTeague", they were registered in school as "Montague". And, that is how my father got his last name... now my last name.  But, I should have been a McTeague.

Deb, I have been researching my family tree and those names have com up for me as well.
They are my great great grandparents so maybe we are related in some way. I have hit the same road block as you.
