Ship Pendragon of Liverpool - Symons
« on: Wednesday 20 June 07 23:53 BST (UK) »
Does any one know anything about the ship Pendragon of Liverpool ?

I came across a grave at St Minver Cornwall -

Charles Symons son of Henry & Mary Ann Symons born at Rosewerrow Jan 3rd 1840, Master of the ship "Pendragon" of Liverpool. Who was washed overboard during a hurricaine in The Indian Ocean on 12th March 1876 in the 36th year of his age. - Tablet erected by his mother.

Any information about the ship and its connections with Cornwall would be welcomed

Hi Cheshiremog,

have you tried contacting The Maritime Museum, in Liverpool. They may be able to help. Their website is:-

Dear Red
Thanks for that - I will check it out
I really think this site could do with a Maritime section - it sort of gets divided between occupations and military at the moment
What do you think?

The "Pendragon" was a 215ft long, 1278 tonne iron sailing barque built in 1868.
The last owners were McDiarmid & Greenshields and was Liverpool registered.
The Pendragon was wrecked on 27/10/1896 after catching fire seven days out from Tocopilla Chile on the return to Falmouth. The cargo was nitrate of soda. None of the 21 crew were lost.
You can see an enquiry report at http://www.plimsoll.org/resources/SCCLibraries/WreckReports/17235.asp

Hope you read this after 5 years of your original post!

Hello from Australia. I have an old seamans chest I bought outside Sydney about 30 years ago, and inside the lid, penned in ink is:
S.Welsh, ss Pendragon, Liverpool, 1879. I have found out from trove.nla.gov.au, this person was Samuel Welsh 3rd mate, and this ship was captained by Samuel Morrish (after Master Charles Symons disaster). Still looking for more info when I came across your post. Also, there is a story about Captain Charles Symon on http://www.thesocialhistorian.com/cyclone-indian-ocean/
