DE RESCORLA The Last of His Line?
« on: Thursday 21 June 07 00:06 BST (UK) »
Has anyone come across the name De Rescorla possibly De Rescorth ? I came across a grave at St Minver:-

Jenefer wife of Julian of Trevigo in the parish of Laniyett? died 15 June 1838? (44?) only child of George De Rescorth ? Rescorla ? Who is the LAST representative of this ancient family. De Rescorla of Rescorla near Saint Austell in this county.

Can anyone tell me what the surname was ?  And was it George or was it Jenefer who were the last of this line? (I mean - did Jenefer die after or before her father George. Or any history about the name and line would be very interesting - I guess it goes back a long way if they were part of an ancient family.
And finally - who was Julian of Trevigo?

Hi cheshiremog,

For starters I see

Jenifer JULIAN died Jun 1/4 1838 Bodmin 9 31

Thomas JULIAN = Jenipher RESCOLA 2 Jan 1813 Roche

Quote
Rescorla of Rescorla in St. Austell. — George Rescorla, the representative of this reduced family, is a day-labourer at Roche.

St Minver 1841 census

JULIAN Thos 50 Y (yes born in County) Farmer
JULIAN Jeremiah 20 Y
JULIAN Jane 13 Y
JULIAN Mary 25 Y Female Servant
RESCORLA George 70 Y Assistant

I presume since George only had the daughter, she was the last this Rescorla line as her children were Julian's. I can't see anything in the Herald's Visitations.

Looks like CRO hold some papers on the family in St Austell

You will find a few earlier entries on the St Austell site

Not having any luck with Jenifer's Birth. This is the only marriage I have found for a George in the right era

Dear Kris
Thanks for all the amazing information.  Sounds like they were a prominent family in the area and that George may have been the last.  I was just intrigued - thats all - I wonder if anyone out there is looking at this family?

There are about 33 Rescorl(e/er/a)s on the 1841 census in Cornwall, about 52 mostly born Cornwall on the 1901 census and about 92 today (plus 42 Rescorl, 23 Rescorle).

There was a Mick/Nick/Rick Rescorla who was quite a hero in the bombing of the Twin Towers. He got lots of others out and lost his own life I believe. He was Cornish.

The Rescorla/Roscorla/Rescorl/Rescorle name is solidly Cornish. Cornish, an old Celtic langauge has been in the UK for probably 1500 years and Cornwall was one of the old kingdoms of these islands.

Rescorla is a name born out of locality and there are 2 locations with the name; Rescorla village and Rescorla farm both in Cornwall and just a few miles apart. The earliest mention of the place name was in 1311 and the earliest use as a surname is was in the mid 1500s. Please Google Michael Rescorle and read the article about the Rescorle Surname for further information.

Rescorlas (and various spellings) were Yeoman - people in between the landowners and the tenant farmers. I have never heard of De Rescorla but it sounds like someone tried to sex up their name - and failed. The De prefix is not Cornish!!

RootsChat never fails to amaze me !

Here's a question posted two years ago about an obscure, and possibly extinct Cornish family, and the next posting is from one of the family !

Quite extra-ordinary !

Welcome to RootsChat Michael !!

I've got Cornish/Devon Pomeroys (spelled various ways) going back to before the  1500's, and one or two of them had 'de la' before their name, a throwback to their Norman ancestors I suppose ...

Dorset/Wilts/Hants: Trowbridge Williams Sturney/Sturmey Prince Foyle/Foil Hoare Vincent Fripp/Frypp Triggle/Trygel Adams Hibige/Hibditch Riggs White Angel Cake
C'wall/Devon/France/CANADA (Barkerville, B.C.): Pomeroy/Pomerai/Pomroy

Further to this conversation, I am from the same family at birth the surname was 'Rescorle' but when, as the family story goes, Grandfather came to Australia, he changed his name spelling to 'Roscarel'. This branch now travels under the changed name.

I have found that the transcription of the older day writing, some hard to read, has also had some imput as to the spelling of names.

Thank you.
