Elise Caroline's surname in the actual index appears to be Niederleithner, and in the 1891 theres this family, I wonder if they are related -

Thank you all for your help. I am mainly focussed on Maria Barbara Shurley as she was my 3rd great-grandmother. I now know that one of her middle names was Magdalena. I have no idea about the religion. However I have an inkling that with the name, Maria Magdalena Barbara Schurle, she may be Catholic. Thanks for the links. I believe that the surname Schurle will help with my further research.  ;D Maybe the surname was Anglicised when they came to England.  :)

Hi,

I found out when the brother of Maria came out to England. I noticed the Schuerle spelling, it has made me think about varying the surname when searching. So far it has changed from Shurley, Schurle etc.

Why are you assuming she may have been Catholic? Lots of girls called Magdalena, Maria & Barbara are all found in my family connections in Germany and they were all Protestant not Catholic.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I think she was Catholic, but I really do not have any idea of her religion. I am researching all areas.

Her marriage certificate should hopefully clear this point up, as it will tell you which church she married in (unless she had a registry office marriage).

The emigration record is interesting because I don't think Braunsbach was in Künzelsau district.  (At least, it's not today).  It's nearby, though - perhaps the family moved to a larger town before they emigrated?

I am not sure whether it shows her religion on her marriage certificate, but I will have a look.

Hey,

It's a long time since I've post and I want to thank everyone for their help. I have found out the parents of Maria Magdalena Barbara, they were Johann Michael Schürle and Maria Susanne Katharina (hence Catherine) Knoblauch. Maria's mother Maria Susanne was born near Kuenzelsau at Kocherstetten, so, as jorose suggested the family may have moved to a larger town, possibly Kuenzelsau. I am grateful for the information about Maria's likely siblings. The details given by those who posted has proven invaluable.

Thanks. :D
