Hi Kerry, Thank you for your help. Walter is another mystery he turns up in 1881 in Birmingham single and a Professor of Music? Can't find him in 1891 though?

Somebody else thinks they have found John & Mary on the 1851 census in Manchester under the name Phillips 9 Coburg Street, what do you think? (sorry no ref)

That's a strong possibility, they must be up north as Walter was born in Hull but they are not showing up on the 1851 in Yorkshire, so might have moved to Manchester by then.

What a mystery!  ;D

An update for all the help which was such a great help with this mystery.

The new GRO index that gives mothers maiden name confirmed that Walter Rudgley or Phillips was registered as Walter Paul Phillips Kingston upon Hull mmn CUTLIFFE.

I still cannot find my Alfred as a Rudgley/Rudgeley/Phillips 1850 Westminster, but I now can confirm the marriage in Devon.
