John Archdeacon Murphy d. 1922 - help!
« on: Wednesday 04 July 07 22:31 BST (UK) »
Hello all! This issue relates to Irish history as well as a family issue...I am seeking more information about the death of John Archdeacon MURPHY on 12 April 1922 in County Limerick. He was the leader of the American group called "Friends of Irish Freedom"  and belonged to a group called Clan-na-Gael. He was involved in raising US funds to provide relief to Irish victims of the 1916 Rising; he also chaired the meeting of amalgamation of several groups - (Michael Collins became secretary).   Basically, I have two questions: #1 - does anyone know where in Co. Limerick John A. Murphy died? Does anyone know the cirmstances of his death? (His body was returned to Buffalo, New York for burial. And, secondly, does anyone happen to know where in Ireland he was born? From the US census, I know his birth month and year: December 1866. Thank you kindly for any assistance in this matter! Pat

Hi Pat, I am a gran niece of John A Murphy. He was born in Bolomore, Banteer, Co. Cork. He died in Churchfield Clarina Co. Limerick. He was staying with his sister, who had moved to county Limerick when she married Micheal O'Brien. He contracted pneumonia while travelling around the country.

Hi Pat, I am delighted to hear from you so soon. I am the unofficial family historian, and would love to have any information about that branch of the family, or even a photo. I know a little about John A, and have his obituary that appeared in the local news paper. It included a lot of information about his life in Buffalo N.Y. If you have any other questions I will try to answer them.  Ber

Hello Mdnrfinder! Oh my! I feel so fortunate that you have responded to my very old query!!  ;D
I have much information about the two Murphy Brothers, Esmond D. and Cornelius, who lived in Buffalo, NY. I am very interested in exchanging information with you.  On Rootschat, if you make one more posting, I can PM (personal message) you with specific details.  Again, welcome to Rootschat and thanks so much for contacting me as i am our family historian, too! Sincerely, patrexjax

Hello! Perhaps you can answer a question that has nagged me for years..... in the 1910 US census, John A Murphy and his family have, in addition to a maid, a NEPHEW living with them! He is Patrick J. Noonan, age 22 in 1910 who was born in Ireland.  It would seem to me that he must be one of your relatives!   ???  Sincerely, patrexjax

edit - should be WILLIAM J Noonan. sorry!

Hi Pat, You think you are fortunate. I can not believe my luck. While I have been collecting about my 4 grand parents most of my life I thought I had run out of new sources. Last year I started searching the internet and found a second cousin. She is living 20 minutes away from me, and I didn't know anything about her. Now, this year I have found you. I am delighted.
John A. was one of 9 children. He had 3 sisters. His second sister was Ellen who married Daniel Noonan(Nunan) They had 3 children. William the eldest, was only 7 years old when his mother died. I found him in our census in 1901 away at boarding school, and that's all I know about him. I was wondering why I couldn't find him in the 1911 census. Do you know did William settle, and have a family in America?
Best wishes, Ber.
