Richard Bulmer c1761
« on: Saturday 14 July 07 08:14 BST (UK) »
I have hit a brick wall. My great x3 grandfather, Richard Bulmer born c1761, married Eleanor Johnson in Monkwearmouth (Sunderland) in 1787. Buried in St Peter's churchyard, Monkwearmouth, 19 July 1806 - the day on which his 4 youngest children were baptised in the same church.

Way back then there were only 3 small villages at the mouth of the River Wear, namely, Monkwearmouth; (Old) Sunderland; Bishopwearmouth.

I cannot find a birth/baptism entry for Richard Bulmer in any of these parish churches.

Has anyone come across someone fitting this elusive man's description elsewhere in County Durham or North Yorkshire - i.e. where the majority o fBulmers were located at that time.

Hope someone can help.
Richard

We  went to Stockton Library yesterday for teh first time, to look up someone on my weife's side. Have booked a reader for next week, s will look at the entry suggested.

Are you related to the Bulmer family. I have lots of info on the Sunderland/Monkwearmouth Bulmes and other parts of Co Durham.

Thanks

Hi Richard - Recently I have found birth dates for both Raphe Bulmer and his wife Elizabeth Hutcheson (married 30 Oct 1608, Bishopwearmouth), plus birth dates for both sets of parents and the marriage date for the (supposed) parents of Raphe. These are all in Familysearch, but none have primary source references.   During your searches, have you found primary sources for any of the above events?

Welcome too Rootschat Grahamsh,

Hopefully lynne j will reply to you soon.

FreeREG has a lot of Bulmer records taken from original Parish Records.

Eg, I will just work on 1 name;

Marriage, 27 Nov 1787 same Church to Mary BENTON
Burial, 7 Aug 1805, South Shields; St Hilda, Occp Ship Builder, age 38 (1767)

+ Burial
Likely Timothy Snr;
Mr Timothy BULMER 20 Nov 1811  South Shields : St Hilda
Age 77, a Gentleman
(1734)

Hi Richard,

Like you I have hit a brick wall with a 'Bulmer' family member.  I have been looking many years for Eleanor/Elen born in Sunderland. In 1901 she gave birth to a son Charles Frederick who was registered with the name Schellenberg, the father being Charles Frederick Schellenberg.  No marriage seems to have taken place.

Unfortunately, I am unable to help with your Richard Bulmer, but wondered if you had Eleanoron your extensive tree.

Many thanks,

Doric

Recently on the National Archives website I've found an 1817 Chancery case in which a Timothy Bulmer 'coal undertaker' of Lower Shadwell, Middlesex is making a claim on the estate of Thomas Yeats of Topcliffe, North Yorkshire (his will is being contested though he was long deceased by then. The Yeats are related to me).

Is this Timothy related to you ship-building and trading family? Perhaps they shipped coal to London and had a property nearby?

Any information will be appreciated.
