1881 Earl st., Longsight/Gorton
« on: Monday 16 July 07 12:53 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I have the 1881 census for James CUNDIFFE, wife Lavina & family (RG 11/3906/78) Civil parish is Longsight Gorton, town Longsight, urban district Gorton, ecclesiastical parish St. Clement.  The address is 83 Earl Street.

Could someone please identify where this particular Earl Steet is on one of today's maps?

Thanks

Thanks Jo,

I found that one too, but was unsure it being the right one.  Further digging suggests you may be right.  James was an "operative brewer".  And I've just found a 1950 memory on the Internet that suggests that number 83 was The Star Pub.

The jig saw is coming together.   8)

Thanks again

Actually Folks the jigsaw as just fell on the floor.   :-[

Using the online 1881 and then going back through scores of households until I can find a street that is there today, Earl Street is close to Ducie Street which is near the top of Plymouth Grove.  Possibly one to two hundred yards down from the National Blood Service on the corner of Upper Brook Street and Plymouth Grove.

Thank you for trying

Jo,

The short answer is yes!  Yet by doing "Previous Household" I came across James' son Frederick's future in-laws, the HIGGINBOTHAMs in Ducie Street and then a few streets later, Dryden Street, which if it's the right one, is still there.  Yet it's about 8 miles as the crow flies from the current Earl Street, just off  the A57 Manchester Road you found this morning.

Odd.

As I don't know the registrar's boundaries I will have to dig a bit deeper.

It looks as if it were still a pub back in 1929 where this is taken from
