Was Lambeth anywhere near Bedford in those days!!!
Keep trying all the suggestions on freebmd but no luck.
Now I have found this I will re-check marriages next time I'm either at FRC or my local library(which funnily enough Pam IS Bedford!)

Thanks everyone-keep those suggestions coming please.
I am due to go to Kew in Jan I think I might try for Naturalisation papers.
Never gone down that route before, anyone else done it ?
Am I going to be bale to find him with his new Angliscied name of HINES?

I'm not altogether convinced that the "H" in "Hubner" is a good match for the "H" of "Head".

How about Stubner?

Pauline

I've changed my mind - I think Pauline makes sense - it doesn't look like the same H now you mention it.

Hi Carol,

have you got an entry for him in any of the later census'?

If you mail me the image, I'll have a look. I've lived in Germany for over 10 years now, so am quite well up with names.

Hi Carol,

I'm a bit late getting in on the act, but here goes ....

Hubner, Hübner or Huebner,
Stubner, Stübner or Stueben,
Stuben, Stüben or Stueben

are all valid german names
(Hubner is not quite as bad as Smith, but it's up there with the Browns and Greens !)

Any chance of a clearer image - as Hack says, it looks like it's been written on blotting paper ! - or failing that, another bit of the image for comparing letters, especially a bit with more H and S and t and St together ?

I don't know if that was a  serious question  ???  or tongue-in-cheek  :P , but Lambeth never moved north of the Thames, as far as I know.   ;D

I think these are definitely the right ones and the same as the 1861 blots. The clue lies in Lambeth - the older children were born in the East End - the two later ones in Lambeth. Unfotunately none of the children were before 1851 or else we could look in the 1851 census also.

Carol,

On FreeBMD both a Mary Silver and Joseph Hien appear under the following marriage reference (as do others so no guarantee they married each other of course!):

June 1854 Whitechaple 1c 711.

Whitechaple includes Mile End New Town so could be the right area.
