What a shame they didn't marry a little later  :(  then at least the civil certificate would have some fathers listed. (Could have left england a little later as well, 1851 would give a better birthplace). Census ages were supposedly rounded down in 1841 to the closest 5 years, but your enumerator seems to have forgotten to do this, so Philip was presumably born about 1807/8 somewhere in Dorset.

Hi Yazzie,

The IGI has a submitted record for Philip showing his christening in 1807 at Iwerne Minster; parents William and Hannah.  There is also a submitted record of his marriage to Susannah Snook giving her details as christening on 6 Nov 1814 at Gillingham, Dorset.

Submitter details are shown.

I've just come across your posting so hope this still helps. I've been researching this family line for many years.

Philip Coombs born 25/10/1807, Iwerne Minster, Dorset, England.
Died 10/3/1870, Filly Flat, Forbes River, New South Wales, Australia
Buried on Private Ground, Yarras, New South Wales, Australia.
Married Susan/Susannah/Susanna Snook, daughter of Harry Snook and Ann Gillard on 29 December, 1836, Saint Peter's Shaftesbury, Dorset, England.  The only surviving record is for their Marriage Banns.
Susannah Snook born on 6 November, 1814, Gillingham, Dorset, England.
Died 29 October, 1907, Forbes River, New South Wales, Australia.
Buried on Private Ground, Yarras, New South Wales, Australia.
In records her Christian name can be recorded as Susan/Susannah/Susanna.

The 1841 Census of England has Philip of Little Down, Holy Trinity, Shaftesbury, Dorset, England, Agricultural Labourer, with wife Susan, sons Henry & James.

As Assisted Immigrants Philip, Brickmaker, aged 41 and Susannah aged 36 migrated to New South Wales, Australia travelling on the vessel “Victoria” which arrived on 2/9/1849, Newcastle, NSW.  Accompanying them were their children Henry Albert aged 11, James aged 9, Eliza aged 7, John aged 5 and Edward aged 2, the remaining children being born in N.S.W.  Philip, Susannah, Henry Albert, James and Eliza were alll listed as being able to read and write.  The 2 youngest children could do neither.  Philip’s Native Place and County were Iwerne, Dorset, Susannah, Henry Albert and James were Gillingham, Dorset and Eliza, John and Edward were Shaftesbury, Dorset.  The family’s religion was listed as Church of England.

Philip was the son of William Coombs through his 2nd wife Hannah (Ann) Andrews.  William and Hannah married on 3 February, 1807, Iwerne Courtney, Dorset, England.  They also had Charles born 1810, Shaftesbury, Dorset and Jane born 1811, Shaftesbury, Dorset.

William's first wife was Ann Dominey/Domoney and they married on 22 May, 1797, Iwerne Minster, Dorset.

Hi, I’ve just stumbled across this thread and thought I’d share Philip and Susannah’s family tree in case you don’t have it.    I’m descended from their son Edward.   Susannah gave birth to Harriet on Newcastle beach Nsw and Edward, who was only a toddler at the time, wandered off and got lost in the sand dunes.  Obviously he was found but it would have been a very stressful time for poor Susannah!!  http://static1.1.sqspcdn.com/static/f/822236/21974504/1361319948060/coombes.pdf?token=d5niM9RGFsG4rzRbhD2mAWE7llY%3D
