Jonathan Parmley Born in Alston in 1777?
« on: Friday 27 July 07 17:51 BST (UK) »
Jonathan Parmley of Linton (Hebden and Grassington). Did he come from Alston, Cumberland?
I am posting this here because Alston parish records are kept by Northumberland Record Office

We have come across my ancestor, Jonathan Parmley in the 1803 Craven Muster Roll. (We believe this is him. Actually the name here is Jonathan Parmeby.) He is registered as living in  Hebden. He is a lead miner and a class one possible combatant (in the case of an invasion by Napoleon), as is mine agent Thomas Dickinson, who was a witness at his wedding. At the time Jonathan was the only person called Parmley in the area, we think.

In 1803 Jonathan married Susannah Frankland, the daughter of a local farmer. They had eight children in all, two of whom died. Their names were; Elizabeth, William, Thomas, Mary, Ann, Mary, Jonathan, Elizabeth. All were born in Grassington.

We know that Susannah’s parents were Thomas and Mary Frankland. It seems therefore that they might have been employing a custom of naming for their children; his father then hers for the boys; his mother then hers for the girls – even using Mary again when the first Mary died.

We cannot trace Jonathan’s birth in 1777. He probably came from a lead mining area to Grassington. We have found the marriage of a William Parmely (sic) to Elizabeth Allison in 1764 in Alston, Cumberland. Using the naming custom, we are working on the hypothesis that these are Jonathan’s parents.

Before going further we’d like to know if anyone has found the baptism of Jonathan which would confirm or disprove our idea.

Although it is possible that the Alston parish records are held in the Northumberland Records Office I have examined the microfilm at the Cumbria Archives at Carlisle Castle.

I have transcripts of baptisms but only from 1813 so unable to locate your Jonathan.

Looking through the records I have the following, you will see that some of the names have been spelt differently – spellings below as extracted. These include the 1764 marriage of William Parmely to Elizabeth Allison which you mentioned.

Marriages:
29 Apr 1710  John Marshall = Mary Parmenley
17 May 1749  John Parmenly = Margaret Walton

Dear Creaney,

Thank you so very much for that. We have made a brave effort at piecing the families together from information available.

16 Aug 1764  William Parmely = Elizabeth Allison
This is almost definitely the marriage of Jonathans' parents

Was there a mention of the place that either of the couple were living at?

Was any abode given for Jonathan or Elizabeth in this record, or even better date of birth?
16 Apr 1814  Jonathan Parmenly = Elizabeth Kindred

It is very unlikely that this is the marriage of the son of William and Elizabeth. He would be 37 years old.

To make sense of all this, it's a matter of looking at registers in both Alston and Carrigill.  I have explained the progress we have just made in an update I have posted on the Cumberland section;

Thanks again for all your help.

Hello again..... Unfortunately I don't have any more information than I have given above. The only thing I can say is that the marriages and baptisms took place at St Augustine's Church in Alston. You would need to inspect the records to get any more such as area of residence.

As well as Carlisle & possibly Newcastle as far as I know you can view the Church records for Alston & other local Churches at the LDS family history centres.

Regards.
