Owen McCarthy was transported [Along with his brothers] for the abduction a of Mary Welsh
.His brothers were Charles born circa 1806 (rape and abduction ); Denis born circa 1816 ( rape and abduction) and Callaghan born circa 1791 (abduction) died 2nd. Jan 1843 in the Colonial Hospital,Westbury,Van Diemans land.

The men were sentenced at Cork on the 23rd (?) Febuary 1841 and embarked from Dublin on 7th August 1841 arriving VDL 2nd January 1842. All the men were Roman Catholic and could read and write.

According to a letter written by Mathew Horgan parish priest of Blarney:
Owen and his wife Catherine nee Casey; had one child, Julia and Callaghan and his wife Mary had seven or eight children  Denis and Charles had aged and infirm family members to look after. Catherine and Julia came to Tasmania.

 By the time they were sentenced they had already served a long sentence and the loss of their property. They were sentenced to death but it was commuted to life for Denis and Charles and 7 years for Owen and Callaghan.

The men had been confined the Jail at Cork and then to the  Kilmainham Jail in the county of Dublin before being taken to the convict ship at Kingston.
There were also two other brothers left in Ireland; John and Pharley
