Barnsley Pinder Oaks Inn/Hotel
« on: Sunday 29 July 07 14:49 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information on the Pinder Oaks Inn in Barnsley. My 2 x Gt Grandparents were living there between the 1871 amd 1881 census.

hiya
i've just phoned the mum in law up to find out where the pinder oaks inn / hotel used to be and she told me it was knocked down years ago. i have some books with old photos of barnsley streets etc and allthough the pinder oaks hotel is mentioned there isn't a photo. it has a list of names from 1872 to 1972 of the people who ran it and the name listed for the years 1872 to 1883 is a john harper and according to the census he was a brickmaker ??

Hello Carolanne

Thank you so much for the information re Pinder Oaks Inn.  My relative is John Harper and he was a brickmaker for many years.  However on the 1871 census his occupation was given as an Innkeeper and his address was Pinder Oaks Hotel. Maybe his wife Elizabeth ran the hotel later on. I now know that the family were still there up to 1883.
Thanks once again

Hi CarolAnne,

In the books that you mention there is a photograph
of the Pindar Oaks. Although it says in the description Pindar Oaks Hotel
the photo shows it as just  "Pindar Oaks"

Presuming that you are referring to Barnsley Streets by E.G.Tasker:-

Volume 7  Page 75 has the photo.

   Hi CarolAnne,

I've got a couple missing from the original set. ( I will lend them out ::) ::) ::))
I wondered if the new set were the same as the old ones.
          Obviously there are differences.

My 5x great grandfather, Charles Tee purchased the Pinder Oaks estate, ni Barnley, in 1855 and lived there with his family.

I've been trying to locate a picture for years now so if anybody could help me I'd be really grateful. I've tried all the usual suspects, google, etc, but to no avail.

Apparently, Pinder Oaks was a maternity home 1921-the mid 1900s when it became a chest clinic. I understand that it is no longer standing.

Kind regards
Jo

Hi Jo,

I've looked through my "bits and pieces" but I can't find

the photo that you are after. You could try the Barnsley FHS.

They may have something. This is from them and mentions your

relative. From a quick look there were quite a few places that were called

Pindar Oaks.  This reference mentions him living at Worsborough.

Could your Pindar Oaks be a differrent one to the Hospital ??.

If it is the hospital one then I would contact the NHS in Barnsley. They

will have photo's of the hospitals etc in Barnsley although they are

probably stored at Sheffield Archives. It's just a case of finding the correct

 people to contact.

Hi Tom

I can see a fair bit more research coming my way now over the weekend.

Just wanted to thank you for your reply and for taking the time to look through your bits and pieces. It's very much appreciated.

Kind regards
Jo
