Guidance needed - Cordner from Belfast
« on: Saturday 04 August 07 12:32 BST (UK) »
1881 Massachussets USA census shows William Thompson Cordner born 1841 Ireland.  His daughter was given "Massereene" as a middle name.

1860 C K Cordner resident at Oriel Lodge Antrim
1870 Clement K Cordner at 12 Victoria Chambers, Victoria Street, Belfast
1900 C K Cordner was agent for the Massereene estate office.

I am sure that William Thompson Cordner must have come from a branch of the Belfast family.  Can anyone give me ideas of how to proceed?

Many thanks
Philip

Hi Philip,

You'll need to establish where William Thompson Cordner was born in Ireland.

I suppose Massereene would be a possibility. CORDNER from Massereene

Christopher.

Hallo, Christopher, thanks for the reply.

Establishing where William Cordner was born is precisely the problem.

Family Search and IGI do not help.  The fact that his daughter was given the middle name Massereene and that there were Cordners living near the Massereene estate in Antrim at the end of the nineteenth century suggests that William came from the Antrim area.

What I need is someone to point me in the right direction for records to search.  Me visiting Ireland is not a possibility.

I live in hope
Philip

I have now found documents for William Cordner.

It appears that William adopted the middle name Thompson - his marriage certificate (1860) gives his name as William Bell Cordner age 20.  On other documents his birth is shown as 19 Sep 1840 in Armagh, son of William Cordner.

Unfortunately, I have hunted on every free site I can find and his baptism does not show up.  His marriage was in a Presbyterian church, so he may have been Presbyterian.

Does any kind Rootschatter have access to parish records from Armagh in 1840 and would be able to find William's baptism (or eliminate churches from the search)

Many thanks in hopeful anticipation.

Did your William marry in Ireland?

In 1861, a William Bell Cordner was called by the defence in a case involving his almost 14yr old brother, Thomas, who apparently managed a shop for him in Lurgan.

In February 1861, an Anne died who was apparently third daughter of the late William Cordner of Clady Bog [this was possibly Clady Beg townland http://www.igp-web.com/armagh/townlands/CladyBeg.htm], County Armagh and sister of a William Bell Cordner of Tandragee and Lurgan.

A William Bell Cordner, grocer, with addresses in Dublin, appears in Bankruptcy lists in various newspapers in 1864.

Thank you scotsmum - that was my William.

I have plenty of information on William's life after his marriage in 1860, but it is his baptism (1840?) that I just can't track down.
