Squibb Family (St Mary's Bridport?)
« on: Tuesday 14 August 07 23:55 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a James Squib(b) born about 1792 in Bridport Devon.

I have checked the IGI without success. Records for Bridport consist of i) New Meeting Barrack Street-Independent, ii) Presbyterian and iii) Wesleyan Methodist.

The Parish Records for St Mary's Bridport do not appear to be available to the public, but I believe there may be Bishop's Transcripts. If anyone has access to these and could do a look up that would be great.

For the record, I have his marriage to Elizabeth Winlow in 1812 Oct 4 at St Hilda South Shields. He is described as a Mariner. He had 6 children (Robert 1813, John 1816, Mary Ann 1819, Elizabeth 1822, Suzanne 1824 and James 1828). He is recorded in the 1851 census as a Pauper, born in Bridport, aged 58 years.

Any comments would be appreciated. This is the first time of posting a message on the board! I am a novice at rootschat.

Welcome to Rootschat Jonnie :D

I had a quick look on IGI for James Squib(b)
There are three born in Dorset, I'm sure Bridport is in Dorset but I may be wrong.
Their birth years are 1784, 1799 and 1802

There are four born in Hampshire, and one in Sussex.

Let me know if you want details, but you probably know this site anyway.  If not, it's www.familysearch.org.  Sorry I can't attach a link yet - I haven't tried before, but I'm sure I would make a hash of it.

That's a really great name - Squibb - I haven't heard of it before, you shouldn't have problems finding them.

Rosemary :)

Hi Jonnie,

If you look on this county (Dorset) board called 'Dorset Resources' you'll find lots of links and tips.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,312.0.html

Here are some links to some Dorset websites for parish registers, you may find them useful:
http://www.dorset-opc.com/index.htm
http://www.dorset-opc.com/links.htm
http://www.dorset-opc.com/Allington&Bridport/Bridport&Allington.htm
The Society of Genealogists has the Bridport registers and will search them for a fee: http://www.sog.org.uk/library/searches.shtml
http://www.originsnetwork.com has the marriages - lots of Squibbs there but again it is a pay-to-view site.

Hope this helps, Barbara

Hello,
I am a member of the Winlow family. My father John Robert born 1909 died 1966 was the son of another John, who had ten children, six boys four girls.
My Dad was a great story teller and told us kids loads of stories about his childhood and his time in the Royal Navy. Sadly all my uncles have now passed on, but if I can help in any way I will
