Alexander Learmonth, Linlithgow
« on: Thursday 23 August 07 17:15 BST (UK) »
Looking at Linlithgow on the net, the name Learmonth keeps cropping up, and it looks like they were a locally important family, so why am I having so much trouble finding him?

Alexander married Florentia Robertson in 1790, and name his son Alexander too. If anyone knows anything about this family I'd be very grateful.

Hi KA

Have you looked at the Wills & Testament section of Scotlands People. You might get additional info on the family from the following. Not sure if this is the correct Alexander:

Learmonth   Alexander   07/01/1819   Merchant in Linlithgow   Inventory ; Deed of Settlement   Edinburgh Sheriff Court Inventories   SC70/1/18

Certainly the entry for Florentia is more certain:

Learmonth   Florentia   28/12/1842   alias Robertson, widow of Alexander Learmonth, Esq of Crossflats, Linlithgowshire   I   Glasgow Sheriff Court Inventories   SC36/48/29

Apart from the son Alexander born in 1794, there was also a daughter Margaret born in 1791 in Linlithgow. Unfortunately no other children's births show on the OPRs.

This looks like a likely entry for Florentia in 1841 prior to her death, everyone showing as born outside in Scotland:

Florencia Learmonth 80
Thomas Learmonth 19, merchant
Margt Taylor    30, female serv.
Janet Thorburn    20, female serv.

Address: Bath Street, Barony Glasgow

This may be the OPR christening entry for the Thomas showing above:

THOMAS SPENS LEARMONTH  Christening: 09 JUL 1822  Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland Parents: ALEXANDER LEARMONTH    and ANNE SPENS

Regards.

Given that the banns/marriage for Alexander took place in Linlithgow and Bo'ness, this looks like a possibility for Florentia's birth from the OPRs:

Birth:07 FEB 1763/ Christening:09 FEB 1763 Bo'Ness, West Lothian, Scotland
Parents:WILLIAM ROBERTSON and MARGARET FULLERTON

Not so clear for Alexander's birth details in Linlithgow. There are only two births/christenings showing in Linlithgow in the right period where the father was called Alexander (I'm assuming Alexader's father was also called Alexander if he called his first born Alexander):

16/02/1756   LEARMONTH   AGNES   ALEXANDER LEARMONTH/MARY GIBBIESON  F   Linlithgow   /WEST LOTHIAN   668/ 0040 0141

27/10/1754   LEARMONTH   JANET   ALEXANDER LEARMONTH/MARY GIBBIESON F   Linlithgow   /WEST LOTHIAN

I saw this post on www.genealogy.com/genealogy/users/l/e/a/Alistair-Learmonth/index.html. There's enough there to make me curious  ::). You could try emailing to see whether the email address is still live (from 2003).

Regards.

This caught my eye probably because I  played in Learmont Gardens when I was young.

I have just bought a disc for Linlithgow Cemetery  There seems to be several graves for Learmont's --- just had a quick look --- so far I have only found one headstone --- many are covered with bushes and not everyone had a headstone.

This stone is for lair b107 and b108
