i would not want to offend anyone

Just in case you haven't seen this already- IGI (www.familysearch.org) lists 3 children of James Scandrett and Elizabeth Hall:
1. Thomas Hall born 16 Apr.1870 Co,Antrim
2. James Dixon born 27 July 1871 Co.Antrim
3. William Seymour born 15 May 1876 Co.Antrim

Also, since your original post the 1911 census and civil registration index have both come online (free) as well as Will calenders and e-catalogue on PRONI's website:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347
www.proni.gov.uk

Magheragall- if you're unsure whether to post recent headstone detail probably best to send information by PM (personal message)

I was looking into the Mcleavy family of Ballinderry as they married into a Mockler family of magheragall and I paided for these searches but can't remember from were I got them. There is a Scandrett in this connection as well

Hi Magheragall

Thank you for all this information and the more recent ones that came via PM. I appreciate all your help as it can be so difficult to research the Irish side, especially when you can't get there in person!

This is the marriage that links the Halls and Scandretts

Belfast Newsletter Friday July 16th 1869 has:
Scandrett-Hall July 14 at Magheragal Church by the Rev Edward Mockler, James Scandrett, Esq Belfast to Lizzie, fourth daughter of the late Thomas Hall, Esq., Magheragal

Thanks again

Nell

Edited
Also thanks to aghadowey for the three links - I have found the 1911 census very useful and am waiting (somewhat impatiently) for the 1901 to become available.

Hi

back to this thread with a request about the Mockler & Mcleavy mentioned in it,

Looking a bit of help

I am looking info on a man who died in WWI, in fact I have quite a bit of info but looking for details of a wedding. Trying to build up a picture of his family before he went off to war.

Mr Edward Mockler married Alice Maud Mcleavy on 08051889.  They had two sons Thomas on 07121891 and Edward on 24061893. Edward died in WW1. Alice Maud died 28041895. At the wedding the witness was Mary Elizabeth Mcleavy. On the 1901 census for Ballinderry it would appear that Mr Edward Mockler had married Mary Elizabeth and by 1911 they had 3 girls and one boy plus the 2 boys from first marriage.

I cannot find the wedding between 1895 and 1901 between Edward Mockler and Mary Elizabeth. I would welcome help.

The 1911 census says Edward and Mary Elizabeth married 10 years with 6 children (4 living) but I could not find a marriage for the couple in the online civil registration index (goes up to 1921 for Northern Ireland counties) so they either didn't get married, didn't get married in Ireland before 1911 or the names have been badly mis-transcribed.

In both census records they are living in Aghnamoney townland-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Legatirriff/Aghnamoney/998468
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Legatirriff/Aughanamoney/198852

Looks like Alice Maud might have died as the result/complications from childbirth:
Birth: unnamed male child born & died 16 Apr.1895 Lisburn district (mother McLeavy)

Children- father Mockler & mother McLeavy (all Lisburn district)-
Mary Florence Mockler born 17 Oct.1900
Grace Marjory Mockler born 15 March 1902
Alice McLeavy Mockler born 10 Oct.1903 died 21 June 1904
Eileen McLeavy Mockler born 26 Nov.1904
John Mockler born 4 Apr.1907
Margaretta Mockler born 4 Apr.1907 died 24 May 1907

Aghadowey

thank you for the info , in particular the extra children

hard to think that they remained unmarried because socially conservative times and Edward was socially very active from what I read on web.

so I would go with outside Ireland or that the records are poorly transcribed.

might try and go to the church records to see

Might be worth checking for a marriage in Scotland as frequent travel between Ulster and the west of Scotland was quite common.

Not sure of the position in Ireland but in England up until the 1907 Act is was illegal for a man to marry his wife's sister- although I know that such marriages did happen anyway.
The 1907 Marriage Act removed no. 17 from the forbidden list (Wife's sister and Husband's brother), provided the first spouse in each case was deceased.

Yes I have checked Wikipedia and there is no doubt. as you say, in fact it speaks of a prohibition in the UK and colonies including Scotland and the only way out was to go abroad. That took money and examples given were painters Holman Hunt & John Collier who could afford to go abroad and marry their respective deceased wife’s sisters.
It is amazing. I went to General registry website and they give the first baby girl as being born on 17/10/1900 to Edward and Mary Elizabeth Mockler whose maiden name was McLeavy.

So I assume that they must have gone abroad
