Hi Samyjay

Don't know anything about your ancestors.

I have a William Byrne and family, also a stonecutter, living in Murphystown for the 1901 & 1911 census. He's not a million miles from your people.

I wonder if stonecutter was an occupation around that area?

Hello Samyjay and Sordibub,

I've just been reading about Eamon Kelly in an article by Mattie Lennon titled "In My Fathers Time." When Eamon was  rehearsing for Seamus Murphy's "Stone Mad", which he adapted as a one-man show, he spent days observing stonecutters at a quarry in the Dublin mountains. There were plenty of quarries in those mountains.

Hi all.
Yet all the men it that area were working as stone masons in the local quarrys
in the Dublin mountians. I have two familys in that area and all the son's and fathers were stone masons.

The history of Lamb Doyle's Pub mentions the granite quarries of Barnaculla which have given employment
for hundreds of years and are still worked today. Some of the granite used to build the War Memorial Gardens, situated on the southern slopes of the Liffey opposite the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park, came from the quarry at Barnaculla ... the rest came from Ballyknockan, Co. Wicklow. All the stone was cut by hand.

Hello

Thank you so much, Samyjay,  for that link on the history of the Kilternan/Sandyford area.

It is especially of interest as I grew up in the Balally estate mentioned in your article. I never dreamed that the name hailed from a 1280 settlement! I now live in Wexford and, by coincidence, recently found that a branch of my ancestors hailed from Murphystown. I have only recently started to research them, tending to focus on other areas of my genealogy.

Thank you too, Christoper. I see from the Lamb Doyle's link that Byrne was a common name in the area (where isn't it : ) . I obviously need to do more research but now that I know something a little more specific about the area, I am sure my interest will drive me to it!

Thanks once again to you both. Isn't it funny how we glean information on these websites and how throw-away comments often bear the most fruit?

My grandfather was Joseph Kelly from Glencullen barnacullia.

Info on the census (1901-1911) is that Joseph Kelly resided at the above address age 18.
Joseph came to a small village where he met my grandmother.
Maybe I have the wrong Joseph but any info would be appreciated

I cant relate your Joseph Kelly to my family. His parents were John and Teresa
Kelly. Your John born 1846. My GG/Grandfather  was John Kelly born 1841 but he was married to Annie Colman. So two John Kelly's born about the same time, both stone cutters and living in the same area. More than likely they are related but I cant connect them. The name Joseph has not come up in any of the Kelly's I am researching.
