Leicestershire and Rutland Asylum
« on: Saturday 01 September 07 08:47 BST (UK) »
I've just received a death certificate of someone who MIGHT be my great-grandmother. She died in the above asylum, and the certificate gives no useful info - they leave out her late husband's first name and occupation. The age is about right, and I know she lived in Leicester.

Does anyone know how I can get the records of a patient/inmate of this asylum? If anyone has done this successfully I'd be very grateful for any tips. I've been searching for my great-grandmother's death for years now, and this is the most hopeful lead so far, so I really do want to follow it up.

All help gratefully received - thanks.

Hi there,

the records for this asylum are kept in the Leicestershire Record Office and they have a researcher who will look them up for you if you are unable to go personally (for a fee of course). The records are fairly detailed for some years. I obtained a certificate like yourself which was fortunately very detailed. There are also a few websites on the asylum if you google it.

Good luck
Leics: Edlin, Isam, Wright, Wesson
Notts: Smith, Hughes.
Lancs: Dobbin, Rowlinson, Marr, Povall, Hall, Halliwell
Berks/ Sussex: Dearlove, Carter, Marchant.

Thanks midmum - I'll write to the Record Office and ask what the charges would be.  Fingers crossed I'll be as lucky as you.

Good luck in your search. I got some excellent details and actual copies of records on my GGrandmother who died in Rutland and leicester Asylum. I also got two photographs of her - the only ones known to exist. So..ask them.

Thanks for the help and support - I've written to the researcher at the asylum. Apparently there's a bit of a backlog, but I should hear soon. David, your message has given me hope - it would be wonderful to get any personal details, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
