Whelan, Mary Josephine
« on: Sunday 02 September 07 11:35 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find her birth date. I think she was born in Kilkenny in about 1866. She married George Stephens Manning, possibly in France and died in 1904 in Kent. She has been very elusive, so any information would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Mike.

While civil registration of births in Ireland began in 1864 it wasn't compulsary until 1870.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Mary,
The only other information I have is her mother's Maiden name was  Serle or Searle. It is very vague so I am not too hopeful. Thanks for your efforts anyway
Cheers, Mike

Thanks for this. It perhaps explains why I cannot find the poor woman.
Cheers,
Mike

You would need to look for church records (if they still survive) but in order to do so you need to know her religion (presumably Catholic) and where she lived (parish name if not townland- just the county is too vague).

Thanks for this info. I think I will just save up my money and go to Ireland and do some researching that way.
Cheers
Mike.

Roman Catholic parish records went online last July
The surname Whelan might be recorded as Phelan
