Back in 1841, before John marries Eliza, here is with his parents .... I suppose Joseph could just be a sibling candidate who might have sired Charles in 1863/4 ... altho, theres scope for another bro/sister in that age gap after John .....

Thank you so much for the masses of info.

I think the answer to Charles' parentage is only going to lie in his birth certificate.

I checked other members of my family on the WW1 medal register and found a couple who were awarded medals. Thanks again for the link it's proved a very exciting find.

Joseph and Selina (Maiden name was Gelsthorpe remember - enumerated as Elinor) are in MOSBRO' in 1871, with a daughter  .... so why was Charles (assuming he is 'theirs') still with Uncle John in 1881 ?

Yes, just interesting trying to pin down the source of Harry's middle name ..... Joseph and Selina are still alive and well in 1881, so its either a pure coincidence that Charles was with his Uncle on 2 census years, or slightly more sinister     :P

Have fun sorting it - do come back and tell what the Certs reveal ...
