Marriage 1808 - Fressingfield - BAXTER/CATCHPOLE
« on: Monday 03 September 07 11:11 BST (UK) »
I have recently found that my husband's gt gt gt grandmother was Ann Catchpole, she married Charles Sheppard in 1826.

I am interested in her mother - Elizabeth Baxter - Ann's birth is recorded on the IGI as 1805 and only her mother is mentioned - Elizabeth Catchpole - I have subsequently found (what I believe to be) the marriage of Elizabeth to Stephen Baxter.  Elizabeth was born around 1762 so my query is would Elizabeth have been married to a Mr Catchpole and he died before Ann was born which is why he is not mentioned on the birth record, or is Catchpole Elizabeth's maiden name and she didn't marry until into her 40's?

Hi SBW

I would think that the latter scenario is more likely and that Elizabeth was born out of wedlock. However, the marriage record for Elizabeth and Stephen BAXTER should show the marital status of Elizabeth.

If you give the date and parish perhaps someone with access to the PRs could help.  It would also be worth checking the Parish LU List at The Suffolk Surname List.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I have searched a little more on the IGI and I have found a Sarah Catchpole born in 1800 with mother Elizabeth Catchpole and no father mentioned.

The entry I have found on the IGI has Elizabeth Catchpole marrying Stephen Baxter in 1808 in Fressingfield on the 16th June.  This entry has been submitted so may or may not be correct. (I know it has her birth year as about 1787 but as i have her on 2 census returns I know this to be incorrect and to be 1762/3)

I have altered your post title and I am moving it to the LU Requests board for you.

To summarize; you need the following marriage entry checked from the Fressingfield PRs in order to determine her marital status.

Stephen BAXTER to Elizabeth CATCHPOLE June 16th 1808

Rick :)

Hi,

It looks like Stephen was a widower.

Suffolk Parish Registers. Marriages at Fressingfield, 1554 to 1837.
Volume Number 14

Stephen Baxter, w., & Elizabeth Catchpole 16 Jun 1808

and the image on Pallot's marriage Index has,

Hi

Looks like my lookup has coincided with daisypetal, but will add what I found out as well  ;).

Taken from Fressingfield PR
(now confirms what you already know)

Stephen Baxter widower
Elizabeth Catchpole singlewoman
Both signed X
16 June 1808
Presence of  Thomas Vincent and John Smith (both signed)

Also, the baptisms at Fressingfield:

Sarah d/o Elizabeth Catchpole 9th Feb 1800
Ann d/o Elizabeth Catchpole 16th June 1805

Joseph s/o Stephen and Elizabeth Baxter 28 Aug 1808
John s/o  Stephen and Elizabeth Baxter 10 April 1814
I checked up to 1822 but could not see any more children of Stephen and Elizabeth

Also at Fressingfield:
Stephen s/o Stephen and Sarah Baxter
baptised 26 April 1770

Regards
Anne
