Hi

I found Isabella on 1851 and besides grandson Marshall MEEK age 2  in the household as you say,  there are  older males listed as her sons,  aged beteween 10 and 19 - all as surname MEEK    Isabella's maiden name was SANSON - per your other post.   It was common for a Scottish widow to revert to using her maiden name - which may indicate her husband 0- the lost Peter to whom you refer?, was deceased. However, it was also happened that a wife was enumerated under her maiden name, even with husband in the house.

Pam has beat me to it with 1861 and 1871  ;D

His parents in 1851: It MAY be indexed as MECK on the SP indexes?

1851: Dundee, Angus
Ref: Parish 282 , ED 9, pg 18
Address:: 98 Cowgate St
Head: William MEEK 28,  Shoemaker, b Glamis Forfarshire
Wife: Catherine MEEK 29, House Serv , b Dundee
Son: Peter MEEK 6, Scholar, b Dundee

Cheers

Hi Sarah  ;D

Thanks for the PM's - you are very welcome - Hope you don't mind me putting this here - but someone may recognise something to help  ;D

According to the IGI, Peter MEEK and Isabella SAMSON had these  children born in Glamis
William Fairweather 1823
Mary 1825
Patrick 1827
Agnes Gray 1829
Robert Osler 1832
George 1834
Alexander 1837
Charles Watson 1839

Such a number of intriguing middle names, too!

1851 William with wife Catherine  is the right age.
He born in the right place
His eldest child is named Peter (after his father?) and
the wife and child match the 1861

Out of Interest , have you seen on the IGI, a Peter MEEK and Isabella FAIRWEATHER were married in Airlie, Angus 1830 - I wonder if there was a connection ?  They also had a son named William, born abt 1833.

Cheers
AMBLY.

Possible marriage for William & Catherine?
*William MEEK m Catharine MARTIN, 13 Feb 1844, Dundee

Possible birth for Catherine?
*Catherine Anderson MARTIN b 12 Jul, bap 22 Aug 1824, Dundee, parents Geo MARTIN & Ann GLENDAY.
The IGI has other children to these parents.  Also their marriage with George as MARTINE and Ann as GLENDYE.

Is this Marshall MEEK's marriage?
*Marshall MEEK m Margaret CHALMERS, 21 Jun 1872, Dundee
His marriage certificate could be downloaded from ScotlandsPeople and would confirm his parents' names.

Hi again Sally,

Do you know that Peter MEEK died before 1841?  Is Isabella (SAMSON) MEEK definitely listed as a widow in 1851 and subsequently?  Do you have her death certificate which should show Peter's occupation?  There is just one death on ScotlandsPeople for an Isabella MEEK other surname SAMSON - in 1873 with Isabella's age given as 77.

There are a couple of "floating" Peter MEEKs in the 1841 census either of whom could be Isabella's husband.

There are only four Peter MEEKs, all born Angus, in the 1841 census (from FreeCEN):
*Peter MEEK (10), a male servant with William HORN farmer in Loan Head, Glammis (sic)
*Peter MEEK (35), a Linen Hand Loom Weaver, alone in Lochside, Kirriemuir
*Peter MEEK (40), a Shoemaker living with Peter MEEK (13) a Tailor's Apprentice in Glengate Street, Kirriemuir

Isabella MEEK, 40, (no doubt Isabella SAMSON) is in Blackhill, Airlie with Margaret 15, Agness 12, George 6, Alexander 4, and Charles 1.

What is probably Isabella FAIRWEATHER who married a Peter MEEK is in the following household (all b Angus) at Cranford, Airlie:
FAIRWEATHER George, 50, Farmer
"  Jane, 30
"  Isabella, 40
MEEK Jane, 10
" David, 5
" Betty, 6m
I am suspecting (no proof) that George, Jane and Isabella are siblings (children of David FAIRWEATHER & Cath FIFE).

I am suspecting (again no proof) that Peter the Linen HLW is the Peter who had children with Isabella FAIRWEATHER.

And that Peter the Shoemaker is the Peter who had children with Isabella SAMSON.  And that 13yo Peter who is with him is the son b 1827 and named Patrick (Patrick and Peter very often being interchangeable).
William Fairweather MEEK, the son b 1823, is I suspect the William MEEK, 15 (ages of persons over 15 supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5), Shoe Maker Journeyman, in a DEMPSTER household in Carnoustie, Barry.

If I may insert my twopence worth into this conversation. I have a Isabella Samson Meek, born 1855 in Heidelberg, Victoria, Australia to Alexander Meek 1838 - 1903 and Margaret Scott 1830 - 1901. Isabella married Ebenezer McFadyen in Victoria in 1873.
Chance, Cartwright, Gauden from Worcestershire, Mason of Rowley Regis, Kestle from Cornwall and Smartt from Middlesex. Okay, so many inter family marriage, any one living in Worcestershire just about
