David Ramsay mother's name was Sophia Ramsey
« on: Saturday 08 September 07 11:53 BST (UK) »
Hi arranroots, I think I am asking the impossible but here goes, just new at this.
My greatgrandfather migrated from Dundee and arrived in Tasmania  Australia about 1830, on his death certificate it only gives his mother,s name as Sophia Ramsey.
I was hoping to find more about his background, and I am not sure just where Dundee is.
Thanking you in anticipation.
Jamielee.

Hi Jamielee

You have forgotten too add what your ggrandfather's name was  :) Can you post what info you do have on him from Australia, eg. approximate birth year (from his death cert?), if he married - the names of his children in order etc.

I'm sure people will be able to help out with searches to see what can be found.

Regards.

Monica

In respect of where Dundee is, it is in the parish of Angus (formerly Forfarshire). Have a look at these links:

For a map of counties:  www.scotlandsfamily.com/county-map.htm
For a map of parishes: www.scotlandsfamily.com/parish-map-angus.htm (Dundee you will find bottom centre)
For a modern map of Dundee, you can look at: http://maps.google.co.uk and just key in Dundee or http://www.multimap.com

Hi Monicalesl and Sancti,
It was very remiss of me not replying to the information you sent me about David Ransay.
Thank you very much both of you, for taking the time .
I have since found out that David Ramsay was sent out to Tasmania as a convict in 1822.
Once again thank you ,sorry I took so long .
Jamielee

Hi jamielee, I'd be very interested to see David Ramsay's death certificate, if possible.

Caroline Ramsay was my great great grandmother, have done a great lot of the family history here

Hi Mark. Caroline's sister Dinah Sophia was my grandfather's great, great grandmother. Would be interested to see what you have, as well.

I would send both of you a private message, but I can't see how that's done. Hopefully you still visit this site from time to time!

To clarify re: David Ramsay's arrival in Tasmania as a convict, these are the basics...
  • 1821   19th April   Tried at Aberdeen   Height: 5/2, Hair: Brown, Eyes: Hazel, Age: 25, Occupation: Sail Maker, From: Dundee, Marks &c: Scar on left wrist, lilt left leg, Sentence: 7 years for "theft"
  • 1821   15th December   Arrived in Hobart aboard the Claudine, having departed London 20th May 1821, leaving his mother, wife Elizabeth & 1 child in Dundee, Scotland
  • 1826   21st September   "Absent from muster & church Sunday last"
  • 1833   29th October   "Charged with stealing a Cedar Board, dismissed"
  • 1834   24th November   Widower, married Dinah Bates, Spinster in Hobart
  • 1850   16th August   Departed Launceston on the Shamrock, bound for Melbourne, having been granted the status of "Free by servitude"

There's a lot more to the story.  ;)
