Locating great great grandmother
« on: Saturday 20 March 04 03:51 GMT (UK) »
My great great grandmother lived in the UK, Chorlton, Manchester,on Back Allen Street #14 I believe. Her last name was Dolan, I do not have her forename but  she was a widow.  Does anyone have a census of 1881 indexed by street name rather than surname so that I may be able to locate her through it. A surname search does not show her, but I have a document refering to her on this street.
Given that she was at the specific address, I would also be interested in any Dolan at 14 Back Allen Street.

Thanks ahead for any help'
Surnames I am Interested in:
Dolan, Banks, Chambers, Bemi, Hills, Crowe

Hi tallted

You failed to mention what town, city or county your g g grandmother was in, mention of her forename would also help.

Hello,

You mention Chorlton, would you know if that is Chorlton-Cum-Hardy or is it Chorlton-On-Medlock  ??? both are next to each other in Lancashire and very close to Manchester.

Hi!
On the family search site you will find the 1881 census, if you click on it to so a search, you can narrow the search down to the Manchester area.  I have done this, but cannot find one living at the address you state, there is a few widows, but as you don't know the christian name it is like sticking a needle in a haystack.
As she is you great great grandma, maybe if you obtained a birth certificate for your great grandparent, it would give both parents names, which would make your search a little easier.

Hi,

I tried to look up the address in 1891 Rg12/3192/3192 page 146-147 and found only Allen Street   :(

There was no Back Allen Street that I could find or no 14 Allen Street that I could find either  :'( Sorry

Maybe someone else could take a look  ???

Hi Sarah,
Many thanks for your help. At the risk of being a little bit annoying, could I ask if there is a Back Allin street.  I have a 1896 map of Manchester that the library kindly sent to me. It shows a Back Allin street ( note Allin spelt with an i).
Again, thanks for the help.

Hello Jim and Ted,

Does that mean it comes under Newton Heath Manchester ?

I have checked Newton Heath and there was no Allin Street or Back Allin Street.
