St Saviours and Christchurch Southwark
« on: Sunday 16 September 07 23:28 BST (UK) »
I have an address for relatives in the 1861 census given as Castle Street, St Saviour Southwark, might someone know where that was. It doesn't come up in the gazeteer of my AtoZ for that area.

Likewise what might the general area for Christchurch, Southwark be?

Just to confuse might there have been a Jewish community in this area at any time. Family history says there is ethnic and religious diversity in the family and if I've got it I want to find it and run a flag up, or something like that  :D

Thank you
Canuc

Wilson, Wright, Morely, Morris (Jewish blood and a name change in there somewhere, but who and when?)
James, Driscoll, Collins, Murphy (all end up in Ireland far too quickly)

St Saviour Southwark is a large registration district which covered mainly Walworth ,Newington  and Southwark which are just south of the Thames.

As far as I am aware having some Jewish ancestors myself there were none in that area but of course someone else may know differently.

Hope that helps  :)

Hi Canuc

Here is a map of that area "West Southwark" 1885

http://www.londonancestor.com/maps/bc-southw-w.htm

It looks like Castle Street is leading from Southwark Bridge Road (just below Southwark Bridge) into Southwark Street.
