Hi Ev

Have you found any of these people on the Scottish Census?  I can have a look for you if not, but did not want to post any details in case you already had that information

Cheers
Karenlee

Hi Ev

I'll leave it for Karenlee to do the census searches if required. Doing a parent search on IGI indicates that the last child showing as born to Donald and Mary Mitchell is early 1862, so Donald looks to maybe have died just before his birth if you have a likely death for him in 1861:

1. MARY MACVICAR Birth: 03 JAN 1847 Glassary, Argyll, Scotland
2. CHIRSTIAN MACVICAR  Birth: 01 FEB 1850 Glassary, Argyll, Scotland
3. JANET MACVICAR Birth: 14 FEB 1852 Glassary, Argyll, Scotland
4. JOHN MCVICAR Birth: 12 JUL 1854 Glassary, Argyll, Scotland
5. PETER MAC VICAR  Birth: 13 MAY 1857 Glassary, Argyll, Scotland
6. DONALD MACVICAR Birth: 12 JUL 1859 Glassary, Argyll, Scotland
7. DUNCAN MACVICAR  Birth: 16 JAN 1862 Glassary, Argyll, Scotland

Their marriage entry from the OPRs:

DONALD MACVICAR Marriages: MARY MITCHELL
Marriage:  13 DEC 1845  Glassary, Argyll, Scotland

Regards.

Monica

karenlee/monica

thank you for your replies
i have census returns for this family plus possible connections aunts and
uncles
i have a copy of a hand written note of the marriage of donald mcvicar and
mary mitchell signed by the minister of the parish
"the within mentioned parties were married this 25th day of december
1845 by donald jackson minister kilmartin"

as far as i know the children were-

mary mcvicar 1847 - 1929
christian mcvicar 1850 - 1881
janet 1852 - ?
john 1854 - 1917(?)(hand note(signed) of birth 12th july 1854 from records)
peter mcvicar 1857 - 1880(death ballimore cottage glassary)
donald mcvicar 1859 - 1926(death perth perthshire)
duncan mcvicar 1862 - 1863(father deceased on death cert.)

the only record of a death for the father is 1st nov 1862 fort william where
a donald mcvicar and john hunter were found drowned age given to both as
40 years no information on parents as this was the results of proculator
fiscal
i am inclined to accept this as he is on the 1861 census but deceased on sons
death cert.  duncan 1863
mary mitchell his wife lived untill 1902 and died at ballimore cottages glassary
maybe this will help anyone else looking for mcvicars in glassary

happy hunting

hi Paul  :)

mcvicar/macvicar(or any of the other variations) are very common in argyllshire
my mcvicar's look to have been in glassary argyll from c1778 to 1902
i have since found out that donald macvicar died 7th nov. 1862 at glassary
and did not drown at fort william in oct. 1862
chances are that we are not related but you never know
if you can get your mcvicar's back to about 1881 i would be willing to help
trace them further back

Hi ev

thanks for getting back.

the earliest mcvicar i have is duncan mcvicar, born 13th april 1795.
he married janet mcnab, she was born 1801 and died 1883.

duncan and janet had 7 children

ann mcvicar - born 1821
mary mcvicar - born 1823
john mcvicar - born 1826
james mcvicar - 1831
peter mcvicar - born 1831
nevin mcvicar - born 1838
jannett mcvicar - born 1840

do any of these names ring any bells?

for some reason, i am most fascinated with my ancestors that come from argyll.

thanks

paul
