Many thanks Ian  ;D

Now I have to find out who Henry Bates (b 1854?) is, as the only sibling of William Bates I know is James Bates.

James Bates was born in 1842 and was living in Berkshire in the 1881 Census.

1881 Census 3 Church Street, New Windsor Berkshire
James Bates Head M Male 39 Marsworth, Buckingham, England Superannuated Foresters Club
Emma Bates Wife M Female 34 Long Marston, Hertford England Dressmaker
Adah Wyatt BATES Dau Female 9 Dinton Buckingham England Scholar
RG11 Piece 1323 folio 17 page 12

The original Bates line stems from Marsworth in BUCKS and in the 1841 the two children listed are 3 and 2 (this one died) while 1851 Census the only 2 children are aged 18 and 9, which is a huge gap!

Many thanks - I will see if there are any replies from any Bates relatives is Middlesex!

1861 has a Henry J BATES, aged 7 born Marsworth, son of John and Sarah BATES, John was a police constable.

Only other BATES in Marsworth in 61 were Thomas and Elizabeth and family, and Newman and Mary. Husbands in all cases list birthplace as Marsworth.

There was a Henry John registered Jun 1853, and just a Henry in Jun 1854. The Henry J in 1861 is probably Henry John.

Thanks Ian.  The kiwis on the forum have been MORE that fantastic in helping me this afternoon!!

Yes the Thomas and Elizabeth are my direct line.

I know of the John and Sarah Bates

and of the Newman and Mary Bates.

BUT I have no idea if they are connected to my Thomas and his brother Charles (father of william and james in previous posts).  Charles was a police officer too for a short time.

John is definitely a family name but Newman is a random.  I will have to see what I can find.

If someone can post the 1891 and 1901 info for Henry (b1854 marsworth) I would be most grateful!

again many thanks

Hi, There are several Newman Bates in branches of my family who all seem to have been based in Buckinghamshire.

I am looking for Sarah,  the wife of William Bates. He was born in Terrick, Bucks in 1866 and was the son of Philip Bates, 1845 in Drayton Parslow, Bucks. I would like to know Sarah's family name. I believe her father was an Anglican vicar.

Christine Thompson.

Hi, Thanks for this. It's really puzzling because my grandfather was Dora's twin, so only 4 in the 1901 census, but it seems that he was already living with his grandparents, Philip and Arabella Bates on a farm in Fenny Stratford. Why when they still had so many children at home could they not have kept him? Christine.

Hi

A census is who was where on one night every 10 years. From the evidence of one night, if there is no other evidence to support it, it isn't sufficient to say that a child was living with his grandparents. Everyone was in Fenny Stratford as they were in 1911

William and Sarah were living at 5 Cambridge Street Fenny Stratford RG13 1360 folio 54
Philip and Arabella were living at Yards End Farm Western Road Fenny Stratford  RG13 1360 folio 40

Probably grandchildren frequently stayed with their grandparents.
