would this be the same place? how would i find out?

I wonder if Bells Yard is near the pub the Eight Bells which I think is in Westgate.  See http://sistercities.co.uk/historic.php

Hi Prozac

In Kellys directory of Nottinghamshire I can only find 2 references:

Eight Bells Yard, Church St, Mansfield

Bells Yard, Willoughby Street, Lenton Sands (ie Nottingham, nowhere near where you are interested in)

What are the names of your people, will that help us?

Jane
Notts: Burrows, Comery, Foster, Beeson.
Derbys: Burrows, Comery, Smith  Lincs: King.

This makes more sense now, the ancestor of my partner was living at 4 Eight Bell's Yard, Mansfield (I hadn't looked at it properly...oops)...

Hello All….. (and Hi to Jane, missed you being around! – hope all is well?)

I hope this might be of some help, from a book I have about “Mansfield’s Hostelry History”, by Barbara Gallon with David J Bradbury.
Just a summary without repeating word for word….

(Old) Eight Bells….
Named to celebrate the completion of the peal of eight bells in the Parish Church.
Building belonged to Brunts Charity and believed to be the home of Samuel Brunts himself.
1764 – let as “Ring of Bells”
1808 – let as “Eight Bells”
In a survey of the town in 1824 it is not named, though the yard is “Eight Bells Yard” .
1832 – Not listed in directory.
1844 – listed as Pub
1879 – listed as “Old Eight Bells”.
1895 – bought by Mansfield Brewery Co.
1925 – rebuilt and enlarged.
1992 – Listed in directory as “Ye Olde Eight Bells”.
1996/97 – converted to Irish Theme Pub and renamed “O’Neill’s

The building is still there and has always been on Church Street.

You might find this link from the “Old Mansfield Society” useful and there is a picture of the Eight Bells…….  http://www.old-mansfield.org.uk/churchst1/chust7.htm

Best Wishes

Sheila.

If you look on Google map for Westgate Mansfield you will see Westgate is a continuation of Church Street.

I imagine Bulls Yard was one of the still existing alleyways that run from West Gate to Clumber St. Although Church St may look on a map that it is a continuation of Westgate the Market Place separates them.
