Clingan
« on: Friday 28 September 07 00:43 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help please.
I'm after the details and place of burial of John Clingan, husband of Mary Williams.
This line of my lot had itchy feet, starting off in the home village of Kirkpatick Durham, Kirkcudbrightshire, later to be found in Leith. From Leith they end up in
Stromness around 1860. The family appear in the 1861 census living in the Main Street, Stromness and later, 1871 Census, Alfred Street. John died 17 Apr 1876 whilst it is believed still residing in Alfred Street. He was a baker by trade and was described as such in the census's.
The family then returned to Leith, and in the process left one son in the Highlands at Brora as a miner and the rest scattering as far as New Zealand - via SA and Aus.
Besides wondering what a Lowland baker is doing ending up in Orkney - no other connections with either the Highlands or Islands - is it possible for anyone to let me know where I could find a memorial inscription or grave location.
Many thanks
Ian

Hi Ian,

The Orkney Family History Society have published a booklet of the Stromness Memorial Inscriptions. I don't have it, but it is available from them on www.orkneyfhs.co.uk .

Thanks for that. It is appreciated. It is also disappointing but at least I have the paperwork.
Just done the same exercise for his son's wife in Brora. No grave present and if
it was it now has another occupant to keep her company :-)
Thanks again.

Hello

I am researching a family tree and the family of John Clingan and Mary Williams of Stromness appear on it.  Any information you may have on this Clingan branch would be very much appreciated.  They are an interesting lot. Any information on John's parents and the eventual whereabouts of their children?  These Clingans appear on the tree I am researching for my brother's girlfriend (a McKay) - by way of Margaret Archibald Clingan marrying George Thomson Hackland and their daughter Maria Stuart Thomson Hackland marrying into the McKay family of Leith.  Many thanks.

Hi Falkirk,
Yes they are an interesting lot.
Will have to dig out my records but all your names seem rather familiar.
This particular branch ended up in Stromness due to a slight cash flow problem! He was a baker by trade.
On his death the family moved back to the Leith area, with one working in a coal mine in the Golspie/ Brora area before he also moved back to the area of Leith and if I recall becoming a foreman in a steel mill/foundry. Some of the others end up in States and then onto South Africa, then Australia and New Zealand. Relations still about in Edinburgh/ New Zealand.

If you drop me a line via messages I will e-mail you details.
Regards
Ian
