Completed: Globe Fields Burial Ground help please
« on: Tuesday 09 October 07 13:21 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
I have just found out that my GGGGGrandmother may have been buried at the Globe Fields Burial Ground (Wesleyan).
Her name was ELizabeth Jeffryes and the whole family are hard to find as they seem to have been Non Conformist and to have not attended the established church. A Wesleyan connection would not surprise me.
The burial entry reads '1835 Jun 21, Elizabeth Jeffryes age 60 yrs, Abode: Church St, Mile End New Town, Situation: 33n, 12n, E.'
Can anyone tell me where this cemetry is as I can't find it on the AtoZ map of Bethnal Green?
Has anyone been there and can tell me if there are any toombstones still standing?
Is her toombstone still there and is there an inscription that may give any information about her?
Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks
Derek

Many of the Burial Grounds in  Bethnal Green, like the Gibraltar Road one have disappeared, the same thing may have happened to Globe Fields.

There is a Globe Road which runs south from Old Ford Road, crossing Roman Road.  This is just to the east of Bethnal Green Underground Station.

The EofL Fam Hist Soc mentions this Burial Ground see this site, scroll down to the Burial Ground section.

The burial records are held at the PRO Kew, (National Archives) 1820-1857

Hope this helps

Thanks for the update.
The PRO is where I found the burial record.
The EOLFHS mention it but don't say where it is.
It still partly exists according to the London Cemeteries web site but it does not give an address, it has to be somewhere near Globe Rd and the Railway.
Thanks

If you look at a map of Globe Road, London E1 you will see where the railway crosses it.  The burial ground was just there under Portman place

Many thanks, I'll take a look when I can. Never know something may have survived.

Looking at google maps there appears to be an area with a lot of trees.  Could be something there

Hi, Give the Bancroft Road Local Studies Library an email, it is just around the corner and they could have all the information you need.

There is a little bit of information about Globe Fields on this site (scroll down the page a bit to find the entry):
