There is a William James Warner born in 1871 in a place called Buckingham on FreeBMD.

WARNER William James   Buckingham 3a 571

The district Buckingham spans the boundaries of the counties of Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire

and a William Warner born in 1874 Northampton

The district Northampton is in the county of Northamptonshire

You also said that Williams father was called William James Warner and mentioned Oxford. There is a birth for a William James Warner in 1841 in a place called Bradfield.

Count the 1871 birth out as there is a death for this William James Warner in 1874.
