STEPHENS
« on: Thursday 11 October 07 22:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Im a scottish researcher chasing up mainly Scottish ancestors however it was family rumour that my paternal line came from cornwall (miners moving up to the scottish coal fields). This has not been the case so far however my Gr x2 Grandmother is recorded as English in the 1891 Census. Her name is Mary-Ann Stephens, born about 1857 ish to Nicholas and Anne ***** and I am presuming this is where the family rumour came from.

Not being familiar with the English records, where would be the best place to start tracing Mary-Ann

Cheers

Welcome to Cornwall Bry-1,

If your ancestors came from Cornwall you will be very lucky as much is available.  ;D

I would suggest a good place to start is with the census which is available free online as are many parish records once you know where in Cornwall your ancestors came from.

Yes agree we are lucky to have cornish roots, because researching is so much easier :)
Try entering Stephens at the free COCP census site to start with - many years complete
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kayhin/search.html
238 Mary Stephens, you can narrow down "Mary A Stephens" and "Mary Ann Stephens"
Searching for Nicholas may be easier pre 1861

A lot of records are at a joint database
http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/searchdb.php?dbname=baptisms

Searching also at free bmd
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl for cornwall results, also gives you some possible areas to follow up.
If you go to cornwall genuki
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Cornwall/ then the parish you want, you will quickly get to available online records also if there is an OPC (volunteer) who will help you with the parish they are gathering records for

Hi again

I was trying to figure out which Ann Nicholas Stephens married ...

on the page were the two Anns .... BARKLE and PETERS
then 2 men ...Nicholas STEPHENS and William MCADAM

The wife of Nicholas, in 1861 states that she was born in ST AGNES, Cornwall circa 1834.
I found an Anne MCADAMS  who states , also in 1861 census , that she was born TRURO circa 1823.

In 1851 ...I find an ANN BARKLA (sic) living in St Agnes with her parents (James and Hannah?)  aged 18, she works in the mine.
In 1851..There is an ANN PETERS b c 1823 who is married ...I wonder if this could be the Ann who married William MCADAM ...thus leaving Ann BARKLE/A to be the wife of Nicholas , mother of Mary Ann b 1858.

Thanks all, especially to deb usa.

Nicholas was married to Ann barkle (Barcel) I have never quite managed to decipher her name from the various statuary documents downloaded from Scotlandspeople.gov.

The latest document downloaded yesterday for the birth of a daughter in 1873 details their marriage in March 22 1855 in Truro.

Can I ask where you found the information?

Thanks again

Hi again,

I have been going through the information most gratefully received and have hit a snag.

Everything seems plausible until the 1841 census which details the parents of Nicholas as Nicholas & Ann.

On the 1913 statuary death record for Nicholas, his grandson has provided these as John (a farmer) and Maria (possibly) with no known surname.

Aaaagh - its pull my hair out time again - was the grandson having a guess or is the census information following the wrong family?

Cheers
