Hi

deb, you have got me digging again (pardon the pun) and I have finally located the death register for Ann Barkle ?? in 1899, parents being (possibly Jasiah & Honey Tonkin --- the writting is worse than mine) so it looks like we are both on the same tracks. Thanks again.

Hi Bry

I have been looking for a while for the Barkla Family in 1841 ....at last I have found them; they were transcribed under "BARKELL" and enumerator wrote them down as BARKELE  ;D

1841
St Agnes
JONAS Barkele (sic) 40 tin miner
Honnor   " 40
John       "  15 Tin Miner
Thomas  "  15 tin miner
James     "  14 tin miner
William    "  13 tin miner
Isaac      "   11 tin miner
ANN        "    8   ........................she married Nicholas Stephens
Mary       "    6
Henery   "    4
Samuel   "    2

all born in county

IGI has this extracted marriage:

Jonas BARKLA to Honor TONKIN
5 july 1823
St Agnes near Truro

so the Jasiah and Honey Tonkin is almost a match LOL

Thanks all,

back to the parentage of Nicholas, are they John & Maria?? or Nicholas & Ann.

I know from a child born in 1873 that Nicholas married Ann on 22/03/1855 in Truro. Scottish statuary records from that date detail the bride & grooms parents. was is similar in England and if so where would I find cpoies of the records?

Cheers

Hi Bry

You can order Nicholas Stephens and Ann Barkla's marriage cert online ...

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

You will need the details of their marriage ... Dec quarter 1854, Truro, Cornwall vol 5c pg 339

I think That Nicholas' parents were definitely Nicholas and Ann. I cannot find a Nicholas Stpehens b c 1834 with parents John and Maria in 1841.

let us know what the cert reveals ...  :)

deb

PS: I have searched the complete and partial marriage index for Nicholas Stephens/Stevens for the Mar q 1855 (the date you gave for the marriage ) and there is none ... dec q 1854 is when they were married.

Hi Deb,

It looks as if Nicholas was a bit of a character. Not only has he moved his family 500 odd miles from cornwall to Midlothian, but, according to the 1881 Census, his wife Ann states that he is in America.

I know he is in Scotland in 1901 from the census return and his subsequent demise in 1913 so how would I find out if he actually went to America (there are two possibilities on "Familysearch" of English miners) He had a child in Scotland in 1873 so I presume he would have sailed from a Scottish port sometime between 1873 & 1880.

Any advice?
