Hi, Could anyone shed some light on what the initials might mean after Duncan's name and also dycpher the 'where from' place names. This is taken from the marriage entry for Duncan Gillies and Marion McRae on 5 July 1831 at Portree.

Thanks Steve

I can see your family in 1841 - I think they must be the family referred to here as the "family of eight" who alone populated the island of Hermetray, now uninhabited.
I can only guess at the abbreviation - GT? Is it possibly something gaelic, like the abbreviation for a minister???
Other than that, I am stumped!
kind regards, Arranroots

The second location (the one for Marion) in the image seems to say: Ferrinilea pt. (i.e. part?) of Bracad(ale)
In the 1841 census online at FreeCEN: http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ there is a 5yo Duncan GILLIES in a household in Fernlay (sic), Bracadale, Inverness-shire. It's a strange household which includes several little children of various surnames.
Do you know the names of Marion's parents? There are quite a few MCRAEs in Fernlay and nearby in the 1841 (Piece 109, ED 5).
I see that the marriage is in the IGI (with Banns being called?) in Bracadale (the bride as Maron MACRAE) and Portree (the bride as Marion MCRAE).
JAP Edited 26 Oct solely to amend Fernlea to Ferrinlea.

Hello again Steve,
As the Banns were called in both Bracadale and Portree, and as we've found Marion's location in Bracadale, I've been looking for Duncan's location in Portree.
I believe that the location reads: Castle of Rasay
In the 1841 census, there is a place in the civil parish of Portree called Castle, apparently on the Island of Raasay. In order of households on FreeCEN it is between Screpdale (modern spelling seems to be Screapadal which is on the Island of Raasay) and Mugary (Mugeary) which is followed by Glenmore (the last two seem to be on Isle of Skye). The castle on the Island of Raasay (ruined - and probably ruined at the time of the marriage i.e. just a locality) appears as Brochel Castle in modern maps.
You can read about the Island of Rasay at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raasay And find it on modern maps spelled Raasay.
Hope the above is correct. I did once go to/through Portree but am relying on Google for information now. Anyone with local knowledge may wish to add/correct.
JAP
