Bernard Finnegan - Barhill Poorhouse
« on: Friday 19 October 07 17:04 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I am now inquiring into a Bernard Finnegan (Finnigan) who was born in 1828 in Ireland. I found him on the 1901 Scotland census living in Dennistoun, Glasgow Spingburn at the Barnhill Poorhouse working as a Rivitter. I am wondering if there is a way I could find out who his parents were and where in Ireland he was born. Because of his age, I am assuming he died in the poorhouse.

If it is the same Bernard Finnegan, he was married to Mary Marrow, also born in Ireland. He had one daughter that  I know about, Alice Finnegan who married Patrick Ward in Glasgow Scotland. Alice and her husband left for New York in 1901-1902.

Breaks my heart to think of him alone living in those miserable conditions.

Thank  you very much.
Liz , Yarmouth Maine

Hi Liz,

Had a quick look at Ancestry and LDS Family search and I am not sure if the 1901 in Barrhill Poorhouse is the same one. In LDS , there are a few marriages of Bernard Finn*gan but not to Mary Marrow, although one was a mary Martin. So what he have defintiely got to start with? Any certificates, marriages where, Ireland or Glasgow etc

Hi Tom,
Thank you for responding! I really appreciate it.

This is what I have: A death certificate from Alice Finnegan whose father is listed as Bernard Finnegan and a mother as Mary Marrow. Alice was born in 1866 in Ireland.

I also have a marriage record for Alice Finnegan to Patrick Ward in Glasgow in 1886. The father's name is Bernard Finnegan. I cannot read the mother's name accurately, but it looks like Mary Mann, which I suppose it could be Mary Martin. I found the same Bernard Finnegan and Mary Martin at Family history. Names get lost in history, perhaps it is the same family.

I states on Alice Finnegan Ward's death certificate that she and her parents were born in Ireland. I am suspicious that the family moved to Glasgow, not just Alice.

I have also heard from a woman here in the States, that she is a descendant of a Bernard Finnegan from County Cavan, Ireland. I found a Bernard Finnegan in Coolnagor or Ricehill, Kilmore Parish, Cavan on the Griffiths Valuation. I also found a Barnard Finnegan in Thomascourt or Drumroosk, Kilmore Parish, County Cavan.

Hope this helps. And once again, I thank you for your help.
Regards, Liz, Yarmouth Maine

The Bernard Finnegan who died in Barnhill Poorhouse in 1904 aged 76 is recorded as the widower of Mary .... surname looks like Feely

His parents are Patrick Finnegan and Mary Connelly

Hi Liz and Sancti,

I have just done a search on IGI for children of Bernard Finegan (or similar) to a Mary. Backs up Bernard in Barnshill being widow of a Mary Feely, so definitely not your one.

On LDS Family Search site, checking family of a Bernard Fin*egan marrying a mary Marrow or similar

Parents Bernard Finegan and Mary Marron: -

Rose Finegan 06 Jan 1865 0555 Raferagh, Monaghan
Anne Finegan 05 Aug 1867 0459 Raferagh, Monaghan
Frances Finegan 19 Jul 1870 Monaghan Ireland
Bernard Finegan 19 Jan 1876 Monaghan Ireland (Manon was surname but lumped with Marron)

Parents Bernard Finnigan and Mary Martin

Patrick Finnigan 03 Apr 1863 Clyde, Glasgow

Parents Bernard Finegan and Mary Feely: -

Bernard Finnegan 08 Aug 1874 Anderston, Glasgow
Frances Finnigan 08 Apr 1869 Middle or New Parish, Greenock
Patrick Finagan 12 May 1871 Anderston, Glasgow

Parents Bernard Finegan and Mary Coyle: -

Bernard Finigan 29 May 1866 0238 Scrabby District, Cavan, Ireland

Parents Bernard Finegan and Mary Conery (Cooney, Canney etc): -

Margaret Finegan 03 Feb 1866 Armagh, Ireland
Mary Anne Finegan 26 Aug 1867 Armagh Ireland
Patrick Finegan 28 Feb 1869 Armagh, Ireland
Susan Finegan 03 Nov 1870 Armagh Ireland
Lucy Bridget Finegan 31 Dec 1873 Mount Norris, Armagh, Ireland
Bernard Finegan 16 Jun 1879 Ballintemple, Armagh, Ireland

I think our Alice could be born to first Bernard, husband of Mary Marron, but not much room to fit a brth in between Rose and Anne. Have a look at this and see what you think.

Hi Liz,

I cannot see Berbard Finnegan and Mary Marron over in Scotland, I have checked the census and cannot see them here. So looks like parents stayed home, they may have had other family ther.

Dear Tom and Sancti,

Thank you very much! I am so grateful for your help.

Based on what Tom has told me about Bernard Ward and Mary Marron coming from Raferagh, Monaghan, I really think this is the right family. I may be completely wrong, but Patrick Ward and his father Francis Ward and his mother Mary McGinnis, also came from Raferagh, Carrickmacross, Monaghan Ireland. So we have the Raferagh connection between the Finnegans and the Ward and now the Marrows and McGinnis families. It just seems to fit. What do you all think?

Tom, I also have the census from Scotland. Thank you very much.

Once again, I thank you both very much. Please let me know if there is anything I can check for you.
Regards, Liz, Yarmouth Maine

It looks to be a long time since you posted on here- but I am researching my Finnegan family and have a Rose Marron who married a great grandfather Patrick Finnegan from Carrickmacross, Monagham, IR.... I Rose mite be related to Mary Marron.... If you have more info I'd love to have it!
