If anyone is still looking for information about Mary Cubitt Siely Chiney Lewis perhaps they would contact me. This idiotic site won't allow me to paste in  my work - and it is too long to retype.

There is a (rather annoying) script running on RC now that prevents right clicking and so means you can't access the paste function using the mouse.
Instead of using right click to paste, simply press and hold the Ctrl key and then press V.

This sounds like a rather interesting family and lizdb made some fantastic finds.

The most interesting [all are 'interesting'] member of the family is Excelsior [Births Dec 1863 LEWIS Excelsior Tyrel Chiney St Faiths 4b p93]. He married Rosa Ovenden ["the Duchess of Duke Street" t v serial was based on her life] in 1893 [Marriages Jun 1893 Lewis Excelsior Tyrel to Ovenden Rose Marylebone 1a p1158]. A family story grew up that Excelsior was the son of 'a gentlewoman' - nothing as we have seen was further from the truth. Excelsior was said to be a butler at the turn of the century but he seems [with his sister Laura] to disappear about 1904.
[Excelsior entered domestic service at Westwick at the home of John Berney PETRE].
How Mary got into the workhouse is a bit of a mystery as it appears her 'husband' did not die and there is no record of a bankruptcy.

Google "Excelsior Lewis" and you will find four files - all of which make very interesting reading!

On the 1871 Census there are two Cubitt children listed at the same workhouse ... ?are they somehow connected???
