mary elizabeth ?? dalton in furness
« on: Wednesday 24 October 07 13:10 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have access to baptism records for the milnthorpe - dalton in furness areas??

Having searched and searched for Joseph Dobson and Mary A (yesterday on rootschat's yorkshire and Westmorland boards - as well as months before that)  I am now wondering if Mary Elizabeth ??  daughter of Mary A  ?? was either illegitimate or born to a previous husband of Mary A's.

I know it's a long shot, but can anyone look up and see if there was a baptism of a Mary Elizabeth 1871 or 1872.  I know Mary A was born in Milnthorpe/Heversham and Mary Eliz is on the 1881 census as born in Dalton in Furness.

Thanks.

Hi

Without a surname it would be absolutely impossible to know which was the correct entry.  Mary Elizabeth were very common christian names as were Mary A (probably Ann)

Presumably Joseph Dobson and Mary A married at sometime.  If you are unable to trace their marriage - they did have other children?

A copy of one of those childrens birth certs will give you Mary's maiden name

Hi Carole,

If only it were so simple.  I can find no trace of a marriage and have tried to get birth certs from the GRO.   When they couldn't find one of them, I sent off for the others. They can't find them either!

My idea with looking for a Mary Elizabeth .............  in Dalton was that even if there were a fewof them , then at least I might have the mother's surnames to play around with, and see if I could track down my great-grandmother that way.  I have tried everything else that I can think of.  And just come up with nothing.  I'm just looking for another starting point.

Thanks for trying though.

Thank you for that, Jane.  That really is worth following up - I hadn't come across her before!

If a birth is on the GRO index and you quote the exact reference from the index, I can see no reason why they could not find it

The 1881 shows Sarah E Dobson as 9 months old which corresponds with the entry I quoted above.  I have also checked the freebmd transcription against the GRO index and it is correct

I think you can safely send for that certificate

Thanks again, but it isn't that one.  My grandmother was Sarah ELLEN (not Sarah ELIZABETH) and she was born near Barnsley, not Bradford.  I have tried to get her cert, and tried for 2 of her sisters - GRO had no record of any of them.  A puzzle.

Hi jsm,
Looking at the 1881 census, your Mary E  Dobson gives her birth place as , Lancaster, Dalton. maybe it is the Dalton in Lancashire a township of Burton-in-Kendal, which is about 4 miles from her mothers birthplace of Milnthorpe.
