Has anyone heard of or know of The Hare Warren Wilton ?  I have ancestors living there in 1901?

Hi Hepburn,

Don't know why but I had got it in my head that The Hare Warren (as written on census) was a pub!!  As you said, not much on google, but thanks for your pic lead.  It doesn't seem very clear exactly what Hare Warren is, a village, an area, or what.  Hope someone else with local knowledge will contact me.

There is a place called Harewarren very near to Salisbury racecourse.  I would imagine it comes within the boundaries of Wilton.  As far as I know it is a wood nowadays, but I think I have heard of there being a cottage there in the past, but can't remember where I got  that from.  Will try to find out something for you.
Julie

ps Try googling  'harewarren wilton'

You can also try googling 'hare warren netherhampton'

What were your families' names?  If I can look them up on ancestry and check out the addresses before and after, I'll be able to tell if it's the right place.

Hi Julieann
Have just read your message in reply to mine re Hare Warren.  Thank you.   My ancestor is listed as living at Hare Warren Wilton Wilts, so I think the Wilton one is correct.  He was a gamekeeper, so your wood also rings true.  Wonder who owned the wood, who he was working for?  Will try the google as you suggested.
Regards
LC

It was ( and I expect still is) owned by the Earl of Pembroke, who lives at Wilton House.  If you google as I suggested you will come across a few historical accounts of the hare warren owed by the Earl.
