Hi Philezra, Thanks for email, I think the main reason for moving to the Channel Islands was work and the ability to provide for their families. I am about to start searching for my missing great grand mother in the French Census records for Brittany  in the area nearest Jersey.

Well I've been advised to write to the "Mairie" (Town Hall) of Portbail - there is a website for the Dept of Manche with records on it but people have been unable to find any records of my Jean Eustache.....marriage OR Baptism

Hi Phil, I dont know where you live but I found the best way to get information was to visit the local Marie. I spend a lot of time in france. Give me as much detail as possible and next chance I get I will call in to the marie. What is the webbsite for Manch.

                                    Bertram.

Well, I'm seriously thinking about going to Jersey and maybe travelling to Portbail.

I've just paid £24 for a ten-year search for the death of my Great Great Grandfather Joseph Ralph Barrow - my GG Grandmother is maried in the 1891 census but a widow in the 1901 census (she is the French connection)

The website where people have searched for me (you have to be a member) is www.cg50.org -

I live in Plymouth, Devon - my Great Grandfather moved here from St Helier in late 1890s.

I've been reassociating myself with French and would love to visit there on my own but if you ARE there............

thank you for your interest and offer

Phil

I meant to add that a death was NOT found - probably the register does not say Barrow..........or has been misread as another name..

Hi Philezra, I'm just about to set off for the ferry from Cherbourgh to  Poole at 6.00pm .
My great grandfather left St Helier 1897 and moved to Portland where I was born.

                   Bye for now Bertram.

So will you be able to look any records up for me at some stage??

Phil

I will write to the Mairie and await their response - then take it from there...

Hi Phil
I have noted with interest your research, especially surrounding Jean Eustache Portbail France as I am related (great great grandfather on the maternal side). Have you managed to discover any more information?  Did you get anywhere with your letter to the Mairie? I know Jean's daugher Jane married my great grandfather Auguste Jean Louis Mahieu, but I don't know where Auguste came from in France, perhaps Portbail too?

I am going to Normandy to see the Beaches in a week's time and hope to go to Portbail to try and discover more on the Mahieu/Eustache thread
If I manage to get there, anything I can try and find for you?
Chris
